Good neighborhoods in san anotonio tx--what is it like there?

Travel Info
we are looking for work in texas. are there good strong family type neighborhoods in san antonio?
what is it like there? we've never been to san antonio so we'd like some perspective from people who live there about how safe it is, how the school system is, etc.

Travel Tips
I am not going to name a lot of schools as some have done you will only forget them but just remember that the best schools in San Antonio are either schools from the Northside Independent School District or the Northest Independent School District. There is so much one has to do in moving a family that trying to remember everything is almost impossible. Many years ago we wanted to live here and for much the same reasons. We are very much a multi-cultural society not all but most neighborhoods are a flag of many nations and many skin hues, this was a drawing card to me as it was made up of many nationalities and that it (San Antonio) would be a wonderful place to raise children. This area is fraught with history and can be a wonderful place for young minds to explore. The obvious is the Alamo but there is the Missions trail, Fort Sam Houston, the Chisum Trail. Your question about how safe is it here in San Antonio is a good question. Do we have crime? Yes. The bigger question, do we feel safe here? Again the answer is yes. Like any place if you go looking for trouble you are going to find it. Do I worry about walking with my grandchildren in the evening in my neighborhood. No. Depending on where you are coming from you are in for sticker shock,....well kind of only in the reverse. Housing cost here is very low in comparison to many places, my house here is $150,000 but back East it would be about $500,000 my house is 2400 sq ft 4 bdrm 2.5 baths, 2 car garage, as you can see nice house at a very reasonable price, Welcome to San Antonio

San Antonio Sucks! Lots of traffic and crime.
No...it doesn't suck, and it's a very family oriented city. More so than Houston and Dallas. You want to stay generally in the North central area when it comes to schools. The city is growing in leaps and bounds...and is affordable and nice.
Stay in these school districts: Northside, Northeast, Alamo Heights, Boerne, Schertz, New Braunfels. Stay away from these school districts: San Antonio, South San Antonio, Edgewood, Southwest

This is kinda neutral because it depends on where you are in the district: Judson...just stay more north.

Reagan is nice, but snooty. Alamo Heights is the same. If you can afford the areas though, you probably belong there. MacArthur, Churchhill and Clarke are very nice. Judson HS as well. All have a good ratio of a mixture of all socio economic groups and cultures.

Not being biased, just realistic. This is a very historical and very conservative city. If you really want to be around more liberal people go to the King Williams area. It's more artsy. But don't send the kids there. Send them to a private school like Incarnate Word or Antonian.
i used to live there. if you don't want to serve tourists, entertain tourists, or clean up after tourists then i would suggest dallas or houston. otherwise, s.a. is your place. get used to having two part time minimum wage jobs each. and get used to an unofficial monarchy in the guise of "city government"
its good depending on where you live. anywhere in shavano park or near there the people are pretty stuck up. i wouldnt reccomend the southside or westside but its not as bad as it could be. theres lots for families to do i.e. museums, zoo, theme parks. gated communities are the safest ones, but thats the same anywhere. just lock your car and front door and you'll be fine.
San Antonio is the eighth largest city in the U.S. but it has a hometown feel. It is a big city with a small town attitude. It's fairly safe, there are good and bad neighborhoods. It really depend where you live. I grew up in a rough area of town, but the crimes where small . I always though of it as a working class area, people work hard so they party hard on the weekend and sometimes the party got a little out of hand. The police would come and tell them to turn down the music and that was that.

If you can afford $250,000 for a new house you are living in a VERY affluent neighborhood. $ 100,000 you are still good area. The north and the northwest of San Antonio generally have the best school and best home. The Edgewood district is a probably the poorest district in San Antonio.

San Antonio is very friendly for 2 reasons. 1) The major industry is (but I think this is changing) tourism. 2) We have several Air force bases in the area.

It's a great area to grow up in and I still love San Antonio, even though I live in Dallas. I love Dallas too, but I think people are more genuine in San Antonio.

On my the day of my sister's 15th birthday party (her quinceanera, it's a very big deal to Mexican families) my dad and I were going to meet my mom and sister at the hall they had rented. We got a flat tire. My dad told me to stay in the car because he did not want me to get my tuxedo dirty. So he gets out o change the tire on the blazer in his tux. All the sudden a old car stops behind him and the older man told my dad to step aside, he'd change the tire. The older man would not let my dad help. He told my dad that he did not want him to get his tux dirty! Anyway the guy changed our tire and told my dad to get going. My dad tried to pay him but the older man would not accept the money. He just got in his car and left. That is how I see San Antonio, when you truly need help people step up to help.

In case you need a realtor you can call Tammy Tran. She is a friend of my that still live in San Antonio. I am sure she would be willing to give you any info you need. Here are her work numbers.
