Travel Info
8-900 a month, 1 bedroom.....allows a cat. Nice neighborhood, La Mesa, Hillcrest....etc. somewhere decent, but cheap....I posted this before...but I think I wasnt clear...

Travel Tips
That price, while low, is not an unreasonable amount to shoot for. You could go way out east into La Mesa, El Cajon, etc., but that is going to put you far away from all the action and probably from where you will be working. You would also have to deal with a commute on I-8 every day... there are no other options.

Hillcrest, University Heights, Normal Heights, North Park: All of these areas are good options. I pay $1025 for a very nice 2 bedroom in Univ. Heights. With the case of North Park and somewhat less with N. Heights and UH you will want to check the area out and make sure its a good fit. Most of those areas are being revived, but a few can come off as being a bit rough.

Where I live is a very spacious and clean apartment and seems to be quite safe. I would shoot for that region because of its central location, relative safety, and inexpensive rents. You will be paying the same price as La Mesa, but will be 10 min from Downtown, the Beaches, Mission Valley, and just about anywhere else in SD worth going.

Craigslist is a good source: Avoid Linda Vista, City Heights, and National City/Chula Vista

gosh, haven't lived there since like, 2000, but I was in Imperial Beach, nice apartment, one bedroom, and I think then I paid around 675 or 700 a month for it, so maybe you could try there.
I live in Pacific Beach and it's around that price range, but not as nice as Hillcrest.

Imperial Beach is kinda ghetto but it is becoming gentrified.

All I can say is try Craig's List. It would be hard to live in Hillcrest or La Mesa, La Jolla for 8-900 one bedroom. You would be hard pressed to find a studio for that price. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are more around that price range.
Well, good luck. In SD, that' s got to be pretty near impossible!

Happy hunting!

My cousin lives in El Centro, an hour's drive from San Diego. A 3 bedroom house there costs, $900.00. The problem there is it is a bit hotter than San Diego.
I had a friend at National city who lives across the Paradise Hospital who rents a 2 bedroom apartment for $700.00+++. It is just near Walgreens.
La Jolla is an expensive community, rental in a studio type room is almost $1,000++.
Not sure if it would be in your price range, but apts are a rip... You normally get a better deal if you rent a condo from a private party. Try craigs list
