Honolulu or san diego? |
Travel Info okay, bear with me here. i was supposed to move to san diego to go to college (im 21) in january. but ive always wanted to go to the university of hawaii. im more familiar with SD but, if anyone has any particular insights to both places, heres my question.... would it be better to spend my fall and spring semesters in california and come back out east in the summer, and sacrafice the san diego summers, or....stay out here and in the summers do the UH summer sessions (good value, very cheap) and maybe move to honolulu full-time to go to UH if my friend accepts a job there in a year after he graduates. its kind of a bland question but i was wondering if anyone had a feel for comparing and contrasting the two cities, especially for a 21 year old student. i know how san diego is a lot, but as far as honolulu, im not quite as familiar, any advice would be appreciated. btw..i know theyre both very expensive, so yeah haha but how much does it cost to ship a car to/from hawaii? Travel Tips Hi, San Diego and Oahu are definitely two great places to live, so I think that you will probably be happy with whichever college you end up choosing. And if not - hey, nothing wrong with transferring! In my opinion, the two most important things to consider when choosing a college are: (1) cost and (2) strength of curriculum. Cost will, of course, depend on the amount of financial aid (if any) you can receive from either college. I hate to say it, but money is definitely a big factor, especially when you're still paying off your student loans ten years after you graduated from college. And of course, strength of curriculum is important to your future job prospects. Whether UH Manoa or a San Diego college has a stronger curriculum depends on what you plan to study. For example, if you wanted to major in medicine or biotech, I'd choose UCSD. While Manoa's medical school is accredited, UCSD has a top-notch research facility at Scripps. But if, say, you were majoring in oceanography or astronomy, UH would probably be a better bet. Having attended both UCSD and UH Manoa, the overall curriculum at UCSD is more rigorous. However, I don't think anyone will think poorly of you just because you graduated from UH Manoa. Manoa may be slightly less prestigious than a San Diego university, but in my opinion, in the end your work experience and performance during a job interview are more important than the school you attended. Both San Diego and Hawaii have great weather, but it is definitely warmer in Oahu year-round, and I think the beaches are nicer. You also can't beat the aloha spirit in Hawaii. But I personally left Hawaii (born and raised in Hawaii) because I felt somewhat trapped there after a while, but that's just me. Oahu definitely has good restaurants, clubs, etc., but it's not as easy to just up and drive to, say, Vegas or TJ on the weekend. Once you're in Hawaii, it's expensive to leave. But you may not want to if you are the more relaxed type that loves surfing, just hanging out, etc. Like the other answerer said...in the end, do what feels right for you. If you really want to attend UH, go for it! As I've gotten older, I've found out that the things I thought would matter so much really didn't. Choose the school you want (within reason), study hard, and you will do well regardless of where you live. Good luck in your decision! Hope this gave you some things to think about... Others Follow your hearts desire. By reading in between your questions, I firmly believe that you love Hawaii. First you want to enrol at the University of Hawaii. Next, your question is shipping your car to Hawaii. You had loved San Diego, why not explore Hawaii if that is what you feel is your hearts desire! I had been in San Diego, it is a nice place to study, it is very quiet unlike LA. My nieces studies at the University of California, San Diego! However, you should also consider job oppurtunies once you graduate. Most of those who live in San Diego go to LA for work! ive heard honolulu is alot like my country so go to honolulu im sure its beautiful with great tropical weather To ship a car is $1200-1500 by container ship, each way. Are you going to HI for that fantasy of living on a tropical island, or does the curriculum actually attract you? But for a few things, UH isn't known for it's stellar academics, and employers on the mainland regard UH as "that vacation school." Just fully realize what you're getting yourself into. On the same token... you're only in college once.... |
