Electricity can vary by the size of your house obviously, but for a 2 bedroom apartment me and my roommate pay about $50-60 a month. Our home phone is only like $15 because we both have cell phones and rarely ever use it and we have no long distance carrier. Time Warner cable offers a package deal where you can get Digital Cable, Internet, and digital phone for like $130. I only have the basic regular cable and internet and I pay $92 a month for those. If I wanted to upgrade to digital cable without the digital phone it would be $115 a month.

If you live in an apartment you usually don't have to pay for water or trash removal service. But if you own a home or condo you will have to pay water and trash will be included with HOA dues.

I don't think things like utilities or groceries or any of that is any more expensive here, mostly it is the rents they charge for apartments. If you want to live near the beach you can pay $1200 for a 1 bedroom apt. in a run down complex.

you can count on gas and electricity to be between $30 & $50 per month. water is cheap. but it all depends on your usage.

If you live alng the coast you don't have to really worry about using a heater or AC(if your home actually has one). For me and a roomate living in an apt in Pacific Beach we pay around $70 for electricity and gas. You don't have to pay for any trash pick up fees in the CITY of San Diego b/c they can't charge you for trash pick up b/c it's illegal. Cable is probably about the same as anywhere else.
Any average would be meaningless. I think the Gas & Electric Co. charges by where you live. Our gas and electric bill was $300 last month for a 2000 square foot house with 4 people living in it. The problem is with the escalator clause in the bill. The more you use, the higher the rate per them/watt. So, use a little more and you pay a lot more. Apt rates are cheaper I suspect.
