My husband and I want to move out of Indiana....?

Travel Info
I would love to move to San Diego. We have two children a 4 yr. old and a 9 mo. old. I would love for my kids to be able to experience the ammenities of a big city...and the great weather and could be outside everyday and play. Although if we lived there we couldn't afford the housing in the areas we wouldn't want to live. We would probably have to just rent a condo. Could you please help me those who live in San Diego...where do young families live?

Travel Tips
Rancho Berrnardo. Poway, and Penasquitos are kind of middle-of-the-road communities that feature safe neighborhoods, yet housing isn't as sky-high as the coast (these are about 7 to 10 miles from the coast measured as a direct line). They'll probably still be shockingly high-priced compared to Indiana.

They're about a 20 minute drive to downtown assuming non-rush hour traffic.

Others
I have moved several times in my life and each time I found it helpful to subscribe to the newspaper before I moved to a new town. In these modern times you can probably get the San Diego paper on-line. Read it for a couple weeks, check the classifieds and outfits like apartments.com and you should get a fair idea of what your options are.
I have also used realtors, even when I don't intend to buy. Go to San Diego, contact a real estate agency and tell them you are interested in moving there and buying a house and ask if they can have an agent spend half a day showing you around various neighborhoods reflecting a wide price range. I have never had a large agency refuse. You are under no obligation to buy but a small present for the agent, like a bottle of wine, would be appropriate.
La Mesa, Mira Mesa, Escondido, Vista are places that are not as expensive. The further east you go....the cheaper places are.

Housing is more expensive here, but often you will find that salaries are also higher than in other regions.
Mission Valley and University City are good places for young families and have tons of condo's but can be kind of pricey b/c they are newer developments. Clairemont Mesa and Bay Park are also reasonable and all these neighborhoods are centrally located an close to the beach, shopping, and downtown. Neighborhoods north of Interstate 8 are better than south of it, the closer you get to mexico the more like it it becomes. Point Loma is also another neighborhood checking out.
I agree with Fred, given your personal situation, Rancho Berrnardo. Poway, and Penasquitos are your best options. This is considered the north inland area. Although a bit less expensive than other areas, they are just as beautiful. Penasquitos sits high in the hills. Several homes have ocean views.

Good luck in whatever you decide.
If you are looking to get an idea of all the condos out there check out http://newcondosonline.com

They have almost 100 condo developments listed in San Diego, maybe you can find on that is in your price range.
