Can anyone recommend a great place to live in the San Diego area, there are too many apts to choose from.?

Travel Info
We've searched rent.com and forrent.com and there are SO many listings, how do we know which towns are ok to move to?

Travel Tips
It all depends what you are looking for but I'll try to list the best places for certain lifestyles:

Pacific Beach/Mission Beach: Great beach communities (obviously). Easy to walk or bike around and good for younger people, under 30. A lot of things are within walking distance. PB has great nightlife, cafes, restaurants, shops,ect.. Lot of college and post college young adults and lot of young professionals and blue collar types. Great mix of people and the town has a really good vibe. Not so great though if you have kids.

La Jolla/UTC: This area has lots of UCSD students and lots of young professionals and young families. Lots of apts and condos there too and they are fairly new. It's a bit $$, but it's also La Jolla and upscale. Lots of shopping and restaurants and a mall are in the area. This area is good for 20-35 yo's. Good place for young children.

Hillcrest/North Park/University Heights: this area is the older, more urban part of San Diego. Rent is pretty reasonable and crime is not too bad. The area has been gentrifying lately and is becoming nicer. Hillcreast is SD's gay neighborhood, so lots of good restaurants there. Good public transit in the area and close to downtown and mission valley.

Mission Valley: Kind of similar to La Jolla/UTC area. Lots of newer apts and condos and tons of retail and restaurants there. There are two major malls and many other smaller shopping centers. Mission Valley has pretty much every store or restuarant you will need. A lot of young professionals w and w/o kids live there. It's kind of congested and a maze there though.

To me those are the best place to live if you want things to do that are close by. Most other places are kind of suburban and not as close to the big activity/entertainment areas of San Diego. I'm not sure how old or what kind of lifestyle you have, but if you are young go for those areas I listed. PB is the best community in my opinion. If you are older and want the more quiet suburbia go for those other areas people mentioned; La Mesa, Escondido, ect./.

Others
Escondido is nice. I have relatives there and if I was to movee anywhere in the San Diego area I'd move there. Unless it's too far for you.
I love the location of Mission Valley. It's pretty much in the heart of San Diego. Close to everything. I lived in the Archstone apartments off of Fenton Pkwy for a while and enjoyed it.
Hillcrest is nice but very expensive. Try the college area of San Diego (near San Diego State University).

My recommendation is my hometown of La Mesa, CA, which is 20 min. away from San Diego. It's also expensive but if you can hook up with a roommate, it should be cool.
San Diego native born and bred
I would suggest living in Mission Valley, too, since it is pretty central to everything, such as La Jolla, downtown, etc. I lived at La Mirage (off I-15) for awhile....rent is affordable if you split with another person.
Ocean or Pacific Beach is a good place to live if you prefer a very laid-back environment.
Try East Chula Vista ... Otay Ranch....Eastlake. This is all new development and really nice. Also your only about 10 minutes away from downtown. There are lots of restaurants, movie theater, malls its a really nice city to be in single or rasing a family. just dont go south chula vista it can get a little "ghetto".
