Romance meets Tourist Attractions in San Diego?!?

Travel Info
It's our anniversary and we only have a short time to spend away celebrating. We've decided to fly to San Diego for a weekend in March to enjoy a bit of warmth, romance and fun. Any suggestions on having a romantic time with a bit of tourist fun thrown in? Where are some great places to stay? Eat? Is renting a car an option or a must have? Thanks in advance.

Travel Tips
If you're staying downtown, take the ferry over to Coronado and rent bikes to ride around the island (well, sort of an island). You'll see great views of the bay, ocean, and bridge, and while you're there, stop by the famous Hotel Del and check out the grounds.

Visit La Jolla. The La Jolla Cove area has some of the most scenic coastline in the area, you can walk down to see the seals at Children's Pool, watch the ocean for dolphins and whales, and then head up to the village and have lunch at one of the many great restaurants. You can also try the Torrey Pines Gliderport for a picnic while watching the hangliders and paragliders do their thing or hike the Torrey Pines Reserve.

Balboa Park is kind of the standard San Diego touristy place, but it really is a nice place to spend an afternoon. There are tons of museums, botanical gardens, great architecture, the Old Globe Theatre Complex, and plenty of lawns to relax on and eat.

You could also spend a day at the zoo (also in Balboa Park), have a sunset drink at the top of the Hyatt and get the best views in town (go early to get a good table), go to Sea World, take a sunset sail, or any of the other great things to do in San Diego.

You'll definitely want to rent a car, our public transportation leaves a lot to be desired. I can't help you with hotels, I live here. :) Source(s): Local Date Ideas & Events

Other Travel Tips
First of all, renting a car is a must have. Don't rely on public transport, it takes forever to get anywhere.

My favorite part of San Diego is the Ocean Beach area. It's got lots of neat little shops, and it's right on the beach. You'll find some tourists there, but it's mostly locals.

For romance, you could always go downtown into the Gaslamp District, but it'll be crowded on the weekends. Or you could take a few walks in Balboa Park (there are museums, a botanical garden, and a theatre). Downtown La Jolla is quaint as well, but expensive. Of course, there are always the free beaches.

Some of the best places to eat are the Point Loma Seafood Company (close to the airport) and Cafe Sevilla downtown.

Of course, there's also Sea World, the Zoo, and the Wild Animal Park. If you have to choose one, I would recommend the Wild Animal Park (in Escondido).

Sorry, got no suggestions on great places to stay.

San Diego is HUGE.....renting a car is a must! Stop in Old Town....very good restaurants & interesting sites for good picture taking.

If you are in a "beach" mood don't miss out on Coronado...its beautiful....its almost like stepping back in time. There are lots of small shops, bicycle rentals & a long nice beach.

Gaslamp (downtown SD) is a very nice place to visit also...mostly shops, malls & restaurant. But also a good place to walk around. If you are interested in going out on the town there are lots of night clubs to choose from. Some of my favorites are, On Broadway, Cafe Sevilla, Aubergine and Martini Ranch.

I suggest you stay around the Downtown area, Old Town, or Hillcrest. Those areas are centrally located.
Been living in SD since 1994
If you are looking for a romantic weekend, I would suggest staying on the beach. http://www.sandiego-romantics.... a source of romantic hotels and things to do in San Diego.
