What is life like in San Diego, CA?

Travel Info
I am writing a story that largely takes place in San Diego. I went over there on vacation about two years ago but i didn't stay long enough to know as much as i should for a story. I would like to know about the businesses and shops they have, what life is like, and what type of mentality the majority of the public shares? I would also like to know about Hillcrest. It's in or around San Diego. Also please compare New York to California. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Travel Tips
California is really Southern California (ex. L.A., San Diego) and Northern California (San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento). There are certainly differences and California should not be stereotyped as a whole.

San Diego has the feel of a smaller city. It's not as congested as larger cities. But there's not nearly as much culture as in cities such as San Francisco or New York City. Even downtown, there's not the feeling of zest, life, and culture as in other downtowns. At its worst, there's a "pod people" type sterility, but it's obviously not really to that degree.

The weather is nice and it's usually sunny. Everyone says that and it's true. Many apartments don't have air conditioning, but that gets a bit hot. But there are no seasons here. No real winter like in New York, so some people miss that. The summer an "indian summer" is bit later than the rest of the country. (Again everything is "nice" but not alive and there are few extremes).

Hillcrest is a nice area uptown that has a large gay population. The (married) owner of a small business in Hillcrest told me that when she first opened shop, she had several gay patrons tell her that she shouldn't have opened a store in the area since she wasn't gay. I assume that is a minority view though. (Remember, even a "gay area" probably still doesn't have an actual majority of gays, it just has more than other neighborhoods).

There's a good bit of urban sprawl in San Diego, but San Diego is divided into many neighborhoods, each with a unique feel (ex. La Jolla is upscale and expensive; normal heights is a little bit alternative and grungy; the gaslamp downtown is clean and overpriced; old town is mexican style with an abundance of mexican restaurants)

To be honest, it can be a little conservative and blah at times, but it's certainly not awful.

Others
I lived there when i was a child(my 1st 7 year in LA & sandiego) & one year: 2nd year in high school)I'm not from US so I can't compair it to newyork...
we used to "fill our fridge" from costco....
in summer seaworld has special night shows...
in 4th of july the rose oarade in LA..so we travilled from Sandiego to LA...
I know this is so litle info....but I hop it helps...
It's very laid back, dressing up for church means not wearing jeans or shorts, half of my church doesn't dress up. Most of the culture revolves around the beach, skating, and sports. The shops are either big name stores or small businesses, many family owned. Organic is important to most people. Hillcrest is where a fairly large gay community can be found. There aren't many African Americans but there are a lot of Asian Americans and Mexicans. The pace of life is slower than in New York and the public transportation sucks and is rarely used except the train during rush hour. I know some people who just moved here from New York. They don't realize that it's ok to use outdoor atms in the middle of the night because you won't get jumped here, I didn't know what to tell them when they asked about a gas station where someone pumped their gas for them, and they were at first mortified at the thought of drinking wine out of plastic glasses. Big things to do here are going to the Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Disneyland, and of course the beach. I hope this helps.
the weather is awesome! As far as business's there are a lot. like resturants, there are phillipino resturants and american resturant and other ones too. they have an awesome outside mall. california is a very expensive state to live in for the cost of living. i mean EXPENSIVE. like the houses. ive seen homeless people, going to the trash cans eating out of an old carryout someone threw away and stuff. ive only seen it 1 time and it is sad. but the weather is the best thing. the beach is awesome. the waves are strong through and the sand is HOT!
