How far is it from San diego to la Bocana Baja?

how many miles is it from San Diego, California to La Bocana, Baja California Norte?

Travel Tips
If I remember correctly, it's right about 100 miles. It's about 30 miles from Ensenada, 18 of which is some of the worst unpaved road you can travel on. I used to go down the the little fishing village of Punto Santa Thomas and SCUBA dive. To get to the point, you head north from La Bocana.

I recommend a couple of things. When you leave Tiajuana, take the toll road down to Ensenada. It's much faster and not expensive. You will need to stop at the Visa office just outside Encenada and get the free Visa to travel further south. Then you go to KM 48 and turn off to the west for La Bocana. You will have just come down a fairly step hill heading west, then back south when the sign for La Bocana/Punto Santo Thomas comes up. From here you will see two roads branch off, one that follows the river and 'the high road'. You definitely want the high road as the low road is often washed out in flash floods. The high road is also subject to major problems, so take it slow. It generally took an hour from the highway to the point. Coming back, follow the signs to the border and "Ave Revolution" to get to the center of T.J. if you get lost (it's fairly easy to do).

The fishing and the people are incredible! There are several really beautiful homes on the coast (which you don't expect to see), and there is a small store at La Bocana. We paid $2-3 a night to camp on an old cement house foundation and the diving was fantastic! There is a boat ramp there and we used it to walk into the water. There is a cold water upwelling that comes ashore at this point so there are tons of sea urcins (they harvest them for Japan here), lots of ling cod (3-4 foot common), cabazon as well as lots of surf perch, tuna and other fish. A fair amount of lobster and very small abalone.

Be prepared for hot days, cold nights and a fair amount of wind most of the year. Don't go wandering off into the hills as there are rattlers. Take fresh water as water is in short supply. We always left what we didn't use for the locals. Their fishing shanties show just how simply housing can really be but they are incredible people.

I've been a lot of places SCUBA diving, but my favorite has always been Punto Santo Thomas. It's rustic beyond your expectations, but it's well worth the trip.
