OC vs LA vs SD?

Travel Info
Hey I know this is a very sticky question and it's likely to incite a heated debate. I"d really like constructive input on moving to LA vs OC vs SD. I am a left leaning independent, artsy yet capitalist. I have a young daughter and am planning on moving to SoCal this summer. Originally I was looking at North San Diego county where life appears to be mellow and... well, mellow. (What else?). A lot of folks say check out OC... why? I don't fear the republicans but do fear an abundance of snarls from my heavily inked arms. I lean towards LA because of the cultural diversity and offerings that I would miss after spending 15 yrs in NYC (too much of everything then shellshocked after 9/11) + 3 in SF (too pc and holier-than-though)+ 2 in Seattle (too white (whiter than my mediterranean skin); too cold; too many ex-inlaws!). I'm looking for natural beauty, healthy living injected with some hip offerings. Too much to ask for? I'd love to hear from locals only- No CA defectors, please

Travel Tips
I live in San Diego and mellow is the perfect word for it. It is a big city but not in the sense of hip, cool, fun city ie New York. I grew up in North San Diego county Encinitas to be exact and if you thought that Seattle was too white well Encinitas, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad all very white. Don't get me wrong it is a very laid back, beautiful area but there is not a lot of culture besides beach culture, if you consider that to be a culture. I now live in the North Park area of San Diego, a little more to do and closer to more stuff, but still laid back. San Diego is nothing like NYC, SF or Seattle. If you are looking for a slower way of life than you would probably like San Diego otherwise you may want to look at LA.

Others
North San Diego county is too much like Orange county for my taste. And most of LA lacks the natural beauty you seek (perhaps Sierra Madre, Topanga Canyon, Parts of Pasadena and Altadena are exceptions). There are a few parts of OC where you won't get stared at much, Laguna comes to mind. LA and healthy in the same sentence is a bit of a twist. There is a lot of Veggie-Yoga-type action, but that could be said of most of coastal Southern California. I don't know why you would not like Leucadia, Solana Beach, etc. But metro San Diego is worth considering. San Diego proper is almost as diverse and less segregated than LA.
The South Park, Hillcrest, North Park, Normal Heights, East Downtown neighborhoods are probably your speed. No lack of diversity, arts, walkability, tattoos...
45 year San Diego resident.
