Which area around San Diego should I stay if I want to be near the beach, nightlife, and shopping.....?

Travel Info
...and I wanted to get a real feel for the city and its natives? I was thinking about checking out one of the following places to find a hotel: Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla, DelMar, Cardiff, Encinitas, or Carlsbad. Which one of these places, or any others you can add, has the best beach and natural scenery with good access to restaurants, bars, and shopping within walking distance to the shore? Thank-you!

Travel Tips
For the specifics you requested, Pacific Beach all the way. Out of all the places you listed, PB is the only one that really has all of them (i.e.nightclubs). The 2 main streets in PB (Grand and Garnet) are pure restaurants, clubs, and shopping. And obviously, right near the beach! The closer your hotel is to Mission Blvd., the closer you are to the beach.
Gaslamp Quarter is awesome too for clubbing, dining, and shopping, but not walking distance form the beach. Although it is walking distance to Seaport Village and the bay, which has a $3 ferry that takes you across the water to Coronado that has a beautiful beach.

Others
Pacific Beach or La Jolla would be your best bet, especially La Jolla for the scenery. Ocean Beach is kind of ghetto and not many hotels. Del Mar, Cardiff, Encinitas, and Carlsbad are all very nice and worth consideration. But they are also smaller, and not as "happening" as PB or LJ. PB has great bars and nightlife and shopping along the main avenue. Also tons of restuarants. La Jolla has good bars and it's not as rowdy as PB, good shopping although expensive, and it has some of the best resuarants in San Diego. If you stay in either place everything should be within walkign distance. For La Jolla make sure you stay in downtown La Jolla as opposed to the UTC/ LJ Village Square area. And for PB most hotels are located on or near Mission and Garnett Ave, which is where you want to be to walk to everything.
Oh my gosh, so many choices, but it depends on the dates that you travel.
Some of the hotels are not available for all dates.

Pacific Beach or La Jolla. both are very different, PB is a young college crowd and La Jolla is a more pricey upscale crowd.
San Diego Beach . . .
