I want to live in a suburb of San Deigo?? |
Travel Info I want to work and go to school in San Deigo. But I want to live in a smaller town outside of SD; I figure housing will be cheaper?? Most importantly, I'm looking for a nice area to raise my son. Travel Tips What you describe, small town with cheap rent, outside of SD does not exist, really. Towns outside of San Diego are the mountains, ranches, that sort of thing, wtih an extra long commute. Believe me, your time and gas (currently $3.39 a gallon) will not be worth it. But don't worry, you can live in San Diego and still find competitive rates. I just moved into a beautiful 2BR/2BA apartment 2 blocks from our Balboa Park in the Hillcrest community for $1100. I recommend going to a rental agency to set you up since you are not personally familiar with the neightborhoods. Just tell them exactly what you want and for how much and they will list your options for you. Good luck to you! This really is a great place to llive. Others There are many towns to live in but the reality is inland you will have higher utilities and more traffic. You probable will spend a lot of time at the beach anyway so if you ad everything up the higher rent at the beach actually turns out to be less of an expense than living inland I move to chula vista and payed less but now I live i ocean beach and actually pay less in daily expenses Ocean Beach is a great place to live and raise children. There is a lot to do there, and there are plenty of grocery stores, resturants ects...Also the schools there are very good. I don't really think the housing is cheaper but, were in San Diego is housing cheap? I found that because you are so centrally located that I saved money on things like gas. There is also Pacific Beach which is really nice again good location nice schools plenty of banks, g-stores ect. The best thing that you can do is check with the Chamber of Commerce for the area they will send you a relocation packet that has info on schools, crimes, living expenses ect... This is a free service, trust me they want you to come live in their city. Here is some info on PB that might help you! http://www.pacificbeach.org I think that you would really like these two places, since you live in SD maybe you could drive and take a look one weekend, be sure to ask the locals any questions you might have, trust me they will not mind answering them! Good luck to you! Carlsbad and Encinitas are both very nice communities north of san diego. Housing is not cheap in Carlsbad, but the houses in developments like La Costa Oaks are very nice. Encinitas is just south of Carlsbad, and there are nice developments there too. Ramona or Alpine are small towns outside of the urban part of SD you might want to check out. They really are not considered suburbs though b/c they are pretty far out and not near other cities, they are kind of in the mountains. It would be about a 45 minute drive to other parts of SD from either of those cities. But if you want to be closer to San Diego then you can check out cheaper places like Lakeside, Santee, El Cajon, Paradise Valley in East SD County. San Marcos, Vista, and Escondido are also decent suburbs in northern San Diego County and are fairly reasonably prices. Oceanside is also pretty affordable for the coast. Other cheaper communties closer to SD and the beach would be Mira Mesa, Clairemont Mesa, and La Mesa. I would avoid Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach, that is the last place you want to raise a kid. PB is a party town full of young adults; OB is similar to PB except it has the tatoo and biker type crowds. No offense to the other poster that suggested those places but they are not cheap and not a good place for families, which is probably why few families live there. Don't get too far away or you will spend all the rent difference on gas. I'd look at La Mesa or Lemon Grove, 2 different towns that are grown into San Diego but are about 12 minute drives from downtown. Both have the 1950s vibe, large lots for smaller houses, as a rule. Any thing you want is there. El Cajon is too hot and too hard to find interesting people. Temecula, Ramona, Alpine, Valley Center, etc. are too far away and you might as well live in the Midwest, because you will never get into town or the beach. I like the older part of Escondido, but its a city to itself, not a part of SD really. Don't expect cheap housing anywhere, unless you are from Boston, Hawaii, NYC, or a couple other places, you will be shocked.
