How much money do I need saved to move to San Diego, CA?

Travel Info
Hello! I am 23 years old, have been out of college a year. Within the last 6 months, my 2 friends (that I have known about ten years each, respectively), and I have been carefully planning our move from Boston to San Diego. We are visiting to find apartments before we move in about 3 months, and everything has been very well planned out. I have about $4000 saved up personally now, and hope to have around $6000 by the time we leave in 3 months. Is this a realstic amount? Here in Boston living is expensive and we have found a lot of apartments in the San Diego area in our range. I am just now, with the moving date getting closer, freaking out about my savings. (As for actual moving expenses, that is low. We are travelling across country and camping, staying in hostels, etc. so it will not be expensive. The remainder of our clothing and packed items will be in my large vehicle which is being shipped and split between the 3 of us). I hope my savings is a good starting amount. Thanks :)

I have lived here my whole life (28) and I think your amount of savings will get you by for at least 2months-depending on how you spend your money maybe more or less.
Yes SD is expensive but so is Boston so it will probably be about the same as home.
As far as the rents go, it will just depend where you guys want to live. I just moved into a new place 2 weeks ago, so I'm pretty familiar with the current rates. Some people are very exaggerated by giving you a basic rental estimation since it really varies a lot. For a good decent 3 BR- it will be between $1500 and $2000. Some neighborhoods I recommend are,
College Area
Pacific Beach
Hillcrest (this is our "gay" community but let me promise you that there are about 50% straight people that live in this area as it is very nice, clean, and close to all)
Banker's Hills
Little Italy
Stay away from the East Village. It is a newly developed area, but there is a lot of homeless shelters right there and is scary at night. That whole "careful where you park your car" sounds like someone just being racist. San Diego is a generally safe place and I'm sure you know people in Boston that have had their cars broken into.
Anyhow, good luck to you guys! I went to Boston last year for a Harvard graduation and had a blast. Hope you like our place...a lot warmer too!

a couple more benjamins then u will be on ur way
rent 1500.00/month
jobs..maybe depends on what you
car insurance..$$$$
food is more expensive.

but yah if You can survive in Boston, then expect it to be ~ the same, or maybe 1/4 to 1/3 more expensive in San Diego..
lived there for 10 years..
It's VERY expensive here for houses, HOWEVER renting isn't too bad. You can rent a 2 bedroom for about $1500 to $2000 a month.

Gas (I bought today) however is $3.15 a gallon.

Oh also, it's the absolute WORST time to move here. This is a TOTAL tourist area, EVERYTHING is filled and busy. Come now, or come around November.
Its going to be very tight. Have jobs ready for all three of you and only one person on the lease.
