How windy is it in San Diego in the summer? |
Travel Info -light breeze -big enough breeze that your paper plate would be blown out of your hands -Hold on for dear life type wind? Would it be difficult to have a picnic in July or August in San Diego because of the wind? Travel Tips It depends on where you are. If you are right at the beach you can always expect a breeze. It will usually be enough to blow loose paper plates around but generally not much worse than that during the summer. Other parts of the county you may or may not get breezes depending on the conditions. The one time we get winds higher than that is during a "Santa Ana" event. This is where the winds come from the Desert instead of from the Ocean. With these winds if you are in canyons you could get 30+ mile an hour winds real easily. Even at the beach this would still be a stiff breeze. The Santa Ana's usually come around Late August to October, but on occassion we may get one or two earlier in the summer. However, unless you get the heavy Santa Ana winds you should be okay with a Picnic as long as you weigh down the things like the plates and napkins. Others I hope not too windy since Im going for a week! Pray for bright sunshine and a soft breeze! Not to worry, even better weather there than here in L.A. They say the easiest job in SD is to be a weatherman. I'm down there a couple times a month and summer is WARM, I mean 80's, and you get a nice slow breeze off the ocean that can pick up a bit near late afternoon. Shorts, sandals and sunscreen. San Diego (aka; Southern CA) is known for its highly variable weather because of its semi-tropical climate. A common saying among those who live here is: "If you don't like the weather, go back inside and wait for 15 minutes, then go outside again and the weather will have changed!". July & August are very good times to go for a picnic here, however, regarding windy-weather- it truly varies from day-to-day. Watching the weather forecasts through the news is a good way to get advance reports on what you can expect ahead of time before going picnicing. They're not always correct (that is how changing the weather can be down here), but they are reasonably reliable. Be prepared, just in case, for changes in the weather too. It is quite common in the early morning for no wind or very little wind to be blowing- then later in the day, the wind picks up (particularly near the ocean), and then- as the day passes into evening, the wind decreases again.
