Travel Tips
Are you going by yourself and are you flexable? If so what about staying at a hostel? I stay in them all the time, you can rent a bed for like $8-$20. They have showers and a common room. Most have lockers. Some even have private rooms. Some even have kitchens so you can cook your own food. It is a good way to meet people from all over the world, but you have to be open to sharing a "dorm" like room. I really enjoy staying in them and they are cheap. Some have a time limit so you will want to check that out, there are a few of them in the San Diego area that are ON OR NEAR THE BEACH!!!! It does take some research. There are a few of them that even offer some type of breakfast, like pancakes...good if you are on a budget. Some even have laundry, internet and so on, you just have to research the place. I found a few that have free parking or parking very near by. Here are some sites that will help you:

sandiegohostels.org
www.hostels.com
hostelhandbook.com
www.hostelbookers.com
www.hostelworld.com
www.tripadvisor.com
www.usahostels.com

If you chose to do this here are a few helpful hints:
Bring a pen light, it gets dark in the dorm and you will need to find your stuff.
Make sure the place has lines, if not bring a sleeping bag.
Also find out about towels, if not bring.
Mark everything in the fridge!!!! Be sure you see your name if not fair game!
Lock up anything of value, I also watch in general what I am leaving out.....I have never had an issue with stealing or any crime in a hostel. Good steps never hurt.
Get to know the host, they can tell you the deals in the area, save you cash and let you know what the locals do.
Relax have a good time, be nice to people, be open to meeting new people.

Good Luck I hope this helps you!

Small, maybe. Cheap, almost impossible!
I go to San, Diego alot and its WAY expensive.
Pacific Beach rocks but you'll find something a lot cheaper in Imperial Beach a little south of there, and it's cool. There's a funky restaurant at the end of the pier. Have fun! 鈽?
You can check out the motels and hostels located on this webpage. They will be the best deals for hotels within walking distance to the beach at Pacific Beach. The most important things is to make your reservations now. Because all hotels and motels get booked in June and July. If you live out of the state of California you can stay at the Banana Bungalow, which is located directly on the Pacific Beach boardwalk. Check out this page to get a list of cheap motel and bungalows.

Also, you can check out:
"Santa Clara Motel
Yes, it is a motel, but it offers the cheapest rates around and it makes everything accessible and within walking distance. We have stayed at this motel, and it really isn鈥檛 all that bad. The beach is right across the street and you can grab your beach necessities at the any of the stores located right next door. It is located at 839 Santa Clara Pl, call 858-488-1193" for reservations. Check out the site too.

Pacific Beach is Not cheap.
Try Ocean Beach ( O.B. )
But don't go to cheap unless you like mold and bugs.

For the most part San Diego is an expensive town.
You have a better chance of renting a room in a home near the beach than renting a house or apartment. The vacation rental market is tight, expensive and booked by the same people year after year. A hotel might actually even be cheaper than renting a private residence during those months.

But the further away from the beach you get, say on Garnet Avenue closer to Highway 5, there are plenty of homes at reasonable (for San Diego) rates. I would say at least 1,000 per bedroom for an apartment, more for a house on the beach.

Good luck and, you may want to just take a place across the 5 rent a car.
