Planning to move to San Diego or Santa Barbara ,which one is more affordable?$2000 a month enough for two?

Travel Info
me and my boy friend are really hesitant about moving to San Diego,as it is said to be an expensive city. What cities can be an alternative to San Diego. We need to mention that our monthly income would be around $2000 or so.And I am really obsessive about living in a city that has beaches...

Travel Tips
SD would probably be more "affordable" overall b/c it is so much bigger and has a much wider range of housing options. Santa Barbara is pretty small and VERY expensive, more so than SD, and there aren't places nearby (within 20 min) that are cheap.

It's gonna be hard on $2000 a month and you don't want to pay more than $800 to 900 for an apt. Gas is expensive, utility rates are higher but we use much less electricity per capita so it evens out; most places near the coast don't have AC and you don't need to use a heater except for some nights during winter.

I'll assume you want a one bedroom or studio. Beach communties will be more expensive than more inland communties. If you live inland you can easily find a place for under $800-900 within 15 minutes of the beach in places like North Park, Clairemont Mesa, La Mesa, ect... Even in some beach communties you can find studios and one bedrooms for that much. Pacific Beach has rentals under $900 for studios and one bedrooms and you'll be within biking and maybe walking distance to the ocean. You're place won't be big or really nice, but San Diegan's don't spend that much time inside; it's a very outdoorsy city.

Sd is a great city, has great weather, and there is so much to do; you'll never be board. $2000 is not that much but if you're splitting rent, utilities, and the rest of expeses with someone else it's doable. People in SD are laid back, down to earth, friendly, and best of all unpretentious. Salaries in SD are lower compared to LA/Orange County and the Bay Area but we don't care how much you make or what you drive like some people in LA or the Bay Area do; you don't need much money to have a great time in SD; beaches are free and even beach parking is free, the only place in CA where that's the case. I would avoid SB b/c it's more expensive, you have less optionsfor housing, not as much to do, and the ocean is colder there. Come to SD, it's a great town and even on a lower salary you can live and enjoy the great lifesyle. If you have any questions about areas to live or anything else feel free to send me a message. Good Luck!

I am sorry but California is not for you. Not on a combined $2,000 a month. Especially not near the beach.

Try Florida, India or South America.
I had some friends that lived in San Diego for about 5 years and they paid 1500 a month for a one bedroom apt downtown. It seems pretty pricey there, luckily they made pretty good money between the two of them.

California coastal communites all seem to be kind of expensive. Maybe give craigslist.org a try and see what the rental prices are like in the areas that you are interested in.

Good luck.
u can make it in both u just gotta manage your money
neither it is going to be very expensive for you both.
I would advise you to live in San Diego as Santa Barbara is more pricey to live in and there arent that many newer places to live...i.e. apts/condos things like that.
You will more than likely get more for your money in San Diego as it is a larger city, more jobs, more competition, more variety and just plain more to do. SB is more of a weekend get-a-way fromt he city such as LA or SD.

I live 20 min from SB and I pay a arm and a leg for a 1/1
Just for rent? Sure. All living expenses, car, if you have a car GAS, food, clothing, school stuff if you're in school, probably not. Cal is expensive, trust me I know, and the homes are mega expensive, especially in coastal cities like San Diego for Santa Barbera. If you don't live extravagantly then you could be alright, not fantastic, but alright.
