RVing! Im concidering bying a travel trailer. Anyone have any thoughts on hoe to get started? |
Travel Info We looked at airstreams. love them! My husband feels it would be to hard to drive my truck pulling a trailer Travel Tips For many years, in my early RVing days, I pulled a fifth wheel behind a pickup. First it was a 20 ft. behind a S-10, then a 27 ft. behind a F-150. Both pulled like a dream and backed so easy. I've never backed a travel trailer, but have done so with a boat for many years. I prefer the fifth wheel since it's more stable. Most truck salesmen will tell you that you can tow anything you want behind the truck he's trying to sell you. Do your research to see what your truck will actually tow. Does your truck have a towing package? If it's an automatic transmission does it have a traqnsmission cooler? All trucks can not tow travel trailers. Heavier trailers may require a weight distribution hitch and sway bars. That's what I love about a fifth wheel. The hitch is mounted in the bed and the piviot point is right over the rear axel. Mount a brake controller and you're ready to go. Airstreams are a nice trailer and should last many years. Thor, the manfacturer, has gone through many changes, some for the better and some for the worse. Watch the quality of the trailer you choose. Be careful and have fun. If you are going to be 'Full-timers', I would try to attend a couple of RV Shows to see whats out there. I wouldn't consider any truck under 3/4 T. I had a Surburban with a new 350 several years ago & it got the job done pulling a 27' travel trailer. When I moved up to a 35' 5th wheel, I knew it wouldn't be strong enough. Checkout the different mfgs. at the RV Shows & never make a decision when you are there. We've tried them all. First, the tent and it was fun until it rained one night. Then the pop-up, which seemed like a hotel after the tent. It was easy to pull and once we learned to back-up, was fun. We now have a motorhome, which I never thought I'd like, yet wouldn't part with. Whatever you do, don't buy new...go to www.rvtrader.com. You can find great deals and lots of good advice. You can also find travel trailers 28-30 ft long that don't require the huge trucks to tow them...skyline.com is a good one for these. |
