San Diego? Pedestrian Friendly?

Travel Info
Thinking of moving to San Diego. Is San Diego pedestrian friendly? Is it safe to walk on the streets on one's own in San Diego? Most probably moving to La Jolla. But would like to know about other areas as well. Thanks in advance!!

Travel Tips
San Diego, especially places like La Jolla are totally safe at night. However, things are very spread out here in SD (like houses in relation to stores in relation to transportation, etc). So it's pretty necessary to have a car. Public Transportation here isn't good at all! They are working on it, but it's not good yet.

But if all you want to know is if it's safe to walk around at night the answer is yes. Certainly familiarize yourself with different areas, and figure out if they are shady or not. But cities like La Jolla are totally safe.

:-)
Others
I dont know if its safe like that anywhere in California. Maybe during the day but not at night.
San Diego is quite safe compared to many cities escpecially considering it is the seventh largest city in the US. It has a fairly low crime rate compared to many other large metro areas. La Jolla is in general one of the safest areas. However, as is the case in any metro area, there are some problems and probably certain locales that should be avoided especially after dark. You should always take precautions when in any type of questionable situation and dont put your self in bad situations. San Diego is a great city and you certainly couldn't ask for better year round weather.
Lo Jolla is safe to walk around in. Stay on the side walks and DO NOT cross the street without extreme caution. The desparate housewives will not stop for lil ol you on the way to their next shopping spree. And if you dent their mercedes with your body, you'll be getting a letter from their lawyer!
SD native (who actually LOVES La Jolla..I also love paradies)
La Jolla's not that pedestrian friendly. Coronado's probably the best area to walk around, although down by the water some of the path isn't well lit, but in the summer it's nice to hear the music coming from Embarcadero downtown, open a bottle of wine and kick back with a few friends, or have a bite to eat. You can get your laundry done, get a coffee or a beer, go down to the water, do some fishing, and even get some church in within a block. Good coffeeshops and coffeestands in La Jolla and Coronado. La Jolla's got too many wound up alpha types trying to find good parking spots that aren't looking where they're going, get upset when you have the right of way and will cut you off.
yes. ive lived in san diego all my life, and ive never had problems with that. i would only say at night it would be less safe, but la jolla is probably one of the definite safer cities.
