What is the quality of life like in the north San Diego suburbs? |
Travel Info Hi, I was wondering if I could ask your advice about San Diego and its surroundings? I am thinking of moving to the area around Carlsbad, Encinitas or Poway and was wondering what the quality of life is like there and is a good place to bring up kids? I'm American from PA but have been living in the London for around 20 years and have only been to LA when I was 12 so I don't remember a lot apart from the great weather. We are coming there this Saturday the 19th to check it out and spending 2 weeks but as its only a short time and I need a more in depth insite. I'm a computer programmer so is this a good area in terms of commuting to where I'm likely to find work? BTW I know realestate is expensive but it's just as bad here! Thanks Travel Tips Expensive is such a relative term. :) If you're choosing between Carlsbad, Encinitas, or Poway, I would have said Carlsbad or Encinitas right off the bat. Poway is a lot farther inland. But, there are a lot more business opportunities in Poway. So, if commuting is one of your major concerns, you may want to settle down in Poway or Rancho Bernardo. They're nice areas. Poway has a "ranch living" feel to it. There is a lot of open space in and around Poway and Rancho Bernardo. The houses are nice, and they are building a lot of new housing as we speak. ....as we type. ;) Poway is however, somewhat far from the beach. If you want to go to the beach often, maybe take up surfing or boating, I would recommend the other locations. Both Carlsbad and Encinitas are incredible places to live. The commute to work might be bad though. Have you considered Solana Beach, Del Mar, or Del Mar Heights? These are a little South of Encinitas. And they just finished construction on the 56 Fwy which takes you right into Poway so your commute to work might not be that bad. Del Mar has a great classy, beachy, kinda artsy feeling to it. And Solana Beach has beautiful coastline. I'd stay away from the 15 freeway, which can get super bad traffic. Source(s): Recently moved to an apartment in Clairemont with a 6 month lease, and I've been scoping out the surrounding area weighing pros and cons of living in different San Diego suburbs. :) Other Travel Tips These are all good, clean, safe areas to raise children. With good schools and many other children to make friends with. All are as good as you could expect to be in to commute to a programming job. Having said this, if you have been living in London, you might have little tolerance for the utter boredom of these areas, especially Poway. 45 year San Diego resident. San Diego's North County is Fabulous. Carlsbad, Encinitas, Leucadia, Solana Beach, Cardiff - great beach towns. But not Oceanside ( it's getting better, some good areas ) Poway is good, but hot like the desert in summer. The father east you live the hotter in the summer time. The freeway commute can be awful ! If you live in N. County then you should work in N. County. Can you afford Rancho Santa Fe ? The Ranch is Fab. and Del Mar is like Shangrila. One of the best high schools in the country is Torrey Pines. Make sure they have room. Just because you buy in the area doesn't mean they can accept your kids. Of course La Jolla is still world famous with great schools. Carlsbad, Encinitas or Poway and was wondering what the quality of life is like there and is a good place to bring up kids? Carlsbad has a few sides. The beach area. The inland sub-division scene and the hills which are rather exclusive. The lifestyle is typical San Diego great and travel on the five (carlsbad)is much easier than travel on the 15.The schools vary do look for the best school score. All in all great place, great schools, great little down town. Could strtch and commute either north or south for work, as far north asirvine so more job options. Encinitas - in parts very exclusive. Same as carlsbad although beaches are more private and less crowded. Great schools but be picky. Much more laid back than Carlsbad and the downtown has tons of food and cafes, more funky and authentic than carlsbad. More like old time san Diego of the sixties. Five corridor commute and a little bit south of Carlsbad, not a fun trip to Irvine...a bit much for daily commute. Poway. Among the best schools in San Diego. Great community, hotter and inland. 15 commute - in a work - terrible and getting owrse. Great community for kids and lovely town. Do not overlook the Morro Hills section of Oceanside, Bonsall and Fallbrook. Some of the little known jewells of San Diego. People don't really know South Morro Hills of Oceanside....really just like Bonsall. next door in fact, a treasure....but do not tell anyone. You must drive up Sleeping Indian Road to Olive Hill and over to Mission and have coffee in the Cafe Primo if you have time, you won;t regret your trouble. Good Luck....North County resident ( Not known as North San Diego by the way)for 18 years. We are also moving to San Diego from Michigan. We visited on a "pre decision trip" and went to Poway and Carlsbad. Carlsbad was very beautiful. My husband will be working in La Jolla and his boss who lives 10 minutes from the commuter train station says the trip takes him an hour. But he has to time it just right. To much travel time for my husband. We will be moving to the Poway school district. (which is a little bigger then the town of Poway) 20-25 min ride ( i hope) Scripps Ranch, Sabre Springs, and Carmel Mt. Ranch is were we are looking at. The house I want costs about $600,000 so we will be renting for a while. I can find very nice rentals in the $2500-$3000 a month. ( a little high for us) They are neighborhoods within Poway Schools and San Diego. ( a very nice part) SOME OF THE TOP RATED SCHOOLS. The closer you are inland the cheaper it gets. ( I would love to live in Del Mar or Solana Beach but it is just too much) I have young children and wanted a back yard. Craigslist.com (san diego area) is good for rental property. Check out Greatschools.com and find out EVERYTHING you can about the schools. it has a lot of info. the schools will give you a window into any community. ( I know nothing about Encinitas though) They say it is buyers market but I worry about taking on that big of a mortgage right now. In Michigan there aren't that many places to rent. But in CA I was looking at rental homes in really nice neighborhoods filled with what looked like professionals. (I was impressed) They seem to have every market. Condos and Townhouses if you want cheaper rents. I hope this helped. I was very upset about the move. Then I decided not to jump into to buying anything and I felt a lot better. About 20 or so of my husband's coworkers from Mi. are going to CA. and everyone he talks to (even those with Ph'Ds who could afford to buy right away) are going to rent. Good Luck. My husband is a chemist so I don't have much info on the computer world. (oh, his co workers transferring to Sandwich told us all about English real estate. Wow) If you decide to buy right away they say it is a wonderful market for it. A lot of bargins. |
