Easy, cheap way to get from UC San Diego to UC Riverside or vica versa? |
Travel Info What's an easy, cheap way to get from UC San Diego to UC Riverside or vica versa? I'm a soon-to-be poor college freshman who wants to visit her boyfriend. Neither of us will have cars. I don't have a liscence and I'll be 17 for a while. Public transportation seems confusing ... I would need an explaination of exactly which bus/shuttle/train to take and from where. Time saving is also good. Travel Tips There's an Amtrak station in Solano Beach, and the Riverside station is just a mile or two from UCR. But round-trip will run about $100. Greyhound will get you there for about $50, but in less style :). Either way, you're looking at about 4 hours each way, with local bus transfers. Have you tried posting a flier, looking for a ride-share? There's gotta be people from Riverside going to UCSD, and $20 would be a reasonable contribution towards gas. If you do the ride-share thing, make sure you check the person out in advance, and leave their drivers license info, license plate and car description with a friend, along with your expected return time (when I'd rideshare, we'd usually swap xeroxes of our drivers license and student ID to leave with friends). So- do your parents know you're planning a 200 mile roundtrip to see your BF? Others First, you will need to get to the Solana Beach station, which is at least 6-7 miles from UCSD. From Solana Beach, you will need to take the Amtrak up to Irvine. Get off the Amtrak train in Irvine, and get on a Metrolink train (Inland Empire - Orange County Line) to Riverside. Once you get to Riverside, you will probably have to take a taxi to the campus. www.metrolinktrains.com Well using public transit would be the best value for sure. The trip will require a few transfers but does not cost much at all to do. From UCSD just take a MTS bus downtown 115 or others. Once downtown take a Coaster train to Oceanside station, from there you can catch a Riverside transit express bus line# 202 to Temecula and finally a Riverside transit express route# 208 into Riverside. The above routing can only be done on weekdays. If you want to do this on a weekend or as a weekday alternative you can catch a Metrolink train from Oceanside to riverside station. Either way the travel time is about 3 hours each way. Good Luck! www.rrta.com Riverside Transit Agency www.sdcommute.com MTS bus & Coaster rail www.metrolinktrains.com |
