Any thoughts/suggestions for a trip to the Wild Animal Park in San Diego,Ca?

Travel Info
I keep finding negative things @ the changes made in the past few years but I really want to hear the positive things my 10 yo son (who loves animals and to be active) will enjoy about the park. Also, the best times to see specific things/shows?

Travel Tips
The positive thing about the San Diego Wild Animal park is that it is more than just a 'fun' place to go and see animals. There is real thought behind this park. Instead of being stuck in small cages or display areas the animals have acres to roam around free. Because they have the extra room, they begin to display their natural behaviors.
I would suggest that before you go, watch a really good documentary about African or Asian mammals with your son. I recommend the Living Planet series by David Attenborough. Then go to the park and observe the animals. See if you can pick out some of the things you learned in the videos.

Here are some tips to make the most of your trip:

1. Go in the evening. Take the $10 ride right before/during sunset, that is when the animals are most active. Even better, go on a rainy day, the park will be less crowded and the animals really active.

2. Be prepared to walk a lot. Walk to the outer areas of the park, that is where you will really be able to observe the animals. Find a bench overlooking the large enclosures and have lunch there, don't eat in the crowded hot picnic areas in the village area.

3. Buy a year pass, it's not so expensive and then instead of going for 1 long tiring day, go for a few hours whenever you like. The more your son learns about animals the more you will want to go back and see them in person. Plus it's non profit so you will be benefiting the animals every time you go.

4. Call ahead and find out when they have the special activities for children on the day you go. (If you get a membership you will get the zoonooz magazine that will tell you about the special activities for children.

You can go at night, there are special tours to see the nocturnal animals. It's really cool. Or you could just go in the day. There is so much stuff to do. There are some pretty good restaurants, shops, a petting zoo, and a cable car. They had a log ride but I'm not sure if that's still there. Anyway, it;s awesome, you should go =)
I live here, I dont hear negative things about the zoo/wild animal park/balboa park. I personally like the zoo and balboa park more.

Parents and Kids enjoy the zoo while Balboa park is more of an adult-sightseeing/relaxing place.

The wild animal park is in north county while the Zoo & Balboa Park (next door to one another) are in southern/coastal SD.

Also The wild animal park is going to be hot as hell in the next few months. I'd go to Balboa Park and the Zoo.
