Drive to the top of Mt. Soledad and watch the sunset. There's a park and a memorial at the top with a panoramic view of the city and the ocean in the distance.

Another fun thing is to have a bonfire on the beach. There's lots of beaches especially in Mission Bay with fire pits where you can bring wood and roast marshmallows.

If you go over to Coronado, it's fun to rent a surrey or bike built for two and ride along the pathy by the Del Coronado. This cost $20 for the hour the last time I went.

There's so many fun things to do in San Diego...check out the site below for lots of ideas. Source(s): http://www.sandiego-romantics.com...
Other Travel Tips
How about the zoo? ~
sea world of course!
take your japanese friend to the gaslamp district. for shopping. they really like shopping!
I don't know if she's a vegan/vegetarian or how old she is, but...

Hotel Del has an affordably priced bar/grill in the patio area with an awesome view. Nice drive down the strand... go to Imperial Beach for a little bit... they may be filming "John From Cincinnati".

There's a place in Kearny Mesa, near where the recently closed Comp USA called Mitsuwa and have her show you some of the stuff she's familiar with there. It's a Japanese grocery store (if there was a Japanese Trader Joes this would be the place) that has other stuff like music, videos, snacks (which I'm sure she's going to want) and a Hello Kitty boutique. Learn a couple of basic phrases in Japanese. This is to establish some things she's comfortable with...that should be maybe the second or third place to go.

Also in Kearny Mesa they have the Movie Studio Diner if you don't want to go to Hillcrest.

You can take a drive up the 101, tons of places to stop in between Solana to Carlsbad. Del Mar fair's also going on. It's a little too warm to head up to Julian.

There's also a bunch of free outdoor music this summer all over the county, sign on san diego might have the agenda in the different area.

Coffeeshops, tons of coffeeshops, and bars, tons of bars.

Sea World's doing the fireworks nightly so that's a matter of heading towards Ocean Beach or Mission Bay Park... or down at the Embaracadero behind the convention center when they're having the orchestra with fireworks at the end.
Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park or Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas are good choices, as many Japanese love gardens. They also like to hike, so manybe hike up Cowles Mt.
