Safe area in San Francisco to stay and recommended hotel for scared white female please?

Travel Tips
San Francisco is a fairly safe city. As long as you are aware of your surroundings you will be fine.

Fisherman's Wharf area is not the best place to stay, in my opinion. It is not really near anything of interest at night unless your idea of a night out includes chain restaurants and no clubs.

Union Square is a much more centrally located area, easy for public transportation and safe and bustling day and night.

I suggest the following hotels in that area, safe, clean, nice and not too expensive.

Maxwell Hotel
Rex Hotel
White Swan Inn
Petite Auberge
Hotel Adagio [a bit more pricy-incredible hotel restaurant]
Galleria Park Hotel [right on the border of Union Square and Financial District with easy public transportation to the fun and funky Mission District or Northbeach]

The Mark Twain hotel that someone else mentioned is a good hotel. The neighborhood may be a bit more gritty than you might feel comfortable in though it is perfectly safe.

Other Travel Tips
I think Fisherman's Wharf area will be a good bet for you.
Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39 area would be okay, as would the Marina district. There are other good places but those are probably your best bets. Stay away from Bay View/Hunters Point area, Union Square area (some nice hotels but bad neighborhood).
ANYWHERE. That place is full of fudge-packing fa*s, you should be safe. Nobody will go after you o.O
I have always liked Fisherman's Wharf. Recently, however, my two daughters, 22 & 19, stayed by themselves at the Mark Twain Hotel near Union Square, and they gave it a thumbs up. They said they never felt fearful at all.
The Marina District for sure--Cow Hollow Inn; hotel del sol; buena vista inn. Lots of young people, safe neighborhood, fun restaurants and bars.

Fisherman's Wharf & Union Square can get creepy at night, so if you are alone I would not venture out after dark in those neighborhoods.
