After 1821, New Spain became independent, and adopted its "Mexico" name. As California was really a big territory, to the upper or north part was assigned the "Alta California" name, and so, the south part was called the "Baja California". Both names were in Spanish, being this the official language in Mexico. Once the Alta California was part of USA, someone took out the "Alta" word, leaving only the "California" one. So, there was not a stolen word from Baja California, because both originated together. The "Alta" was the really stolen word, remaining only the "California". Mexican History It was called Alta California when the Spanish started exploring it, when they no longer ruled it the new rulers dropped the Alta, think of like a nickname.
