Travel Tips
Timerland and North Face [outdoor clothing stores] have shops in Union Square.

There is also a North Face outlet in Berkley that sells close out shoes and clothes for about 1/2 what the would be at the store.

You can't "rent shoes for walking in snow" just buy good quality hiking boots and have them waterproofed. You can buy stuff to do it yourself or take them to someplace like shoebiz [in Bay Area Malls] and have it done.

Have fun falling down in the snow!

You should try a sports store, I think everything should be on sale right now. I don't think anyone rents shoes. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, you could try some second hand stores. It's true that some places may be closed. Yosemite is not very far from where I live, I haven't heard of anything being closed. I would definately recommend that you get snow boots. If your feet are dry and warm, it's a lot better.
Try REI to buy clothes and shoes. They'll help you pick out what you need and their REI label clothes are very reasonably priced and as good as the name brands. They have stores all over the Bay area -- check their website www.rei.com . I don't know how much of Yosemite is open this time of year, but any part of it is worth seeing.

REI is good. Also try Mel Cottons on San Carlos St. in San Jose. They rent snow shoes. They are like REI but not a chain store. In Yosemite, there are the usual sights to see from the valley floor, such as El Capitan, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls. Another access point is Hetchy-Hetchy, which is outside of the main 120 entrance. Unfortunately, roads to higher country are closed this time of the year. This includes Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road. Some hiking trails that start out from the valley floor should be open, such as to the top of Vernal Falls or even farther up to Nevada Falls. Top of Yosemite Falls is very nice but a bit tough to get to. Also check with the visitor center to make sure that the trails are not closed at some point up the trail.
