Why are people in Marin County hypocrites? |
Travel Info I just read this article in the SF Chronicle about a town in Marin County that is vehemtly opposing 4 Habitat for Humanity homes from being built and it really shocked and surprised me. Now Marin County is a very liberal county and the people there support such things as affordable housing and helping out the less fortunate. They claim these 4 units will incease traffic and parking congestion!! It's 4 units so how is that going to make a difference with 12-16 at most living there? The people that live there even say they support H4H and have even participated, but now they don't want it anywhere near them. How can you claim to believe in all these progressive values yet your actions totally contradict it?? I would totally expect something like this in Orange County but not Marin. Read the article and tell me your thoughts on these people. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=... Travel Tips Well, is it really any surprise? This is the county where residents go to Sacramento to demand that lawmakers act on global climate change, and then drive back to their private estates in Hummers. This is the county that loves illegal immigration, in theory, but goes to the cops when noisy immigrant neighbors actually try to move in (they bring down the property values, you know). Rich liberal snobs and rich conservative snobs have much more in common with each other than the "Average Joe". And they often treat their political affiliation as a football game, rather than a matter of life or death. For them, it doesn't matter who's in charge, as long as they bet on the winners. The Republicans and Democrats are nothing more than teams you root for when you schedule appearances with Bill Maher, Pat Buchanan, or Barbara Walters. After all, when your kids are in Stanford or USC and you have millions in the bank, the chances of shifts in government policy actually affecting your daily life and career are slim. Others Marin is full of liberal but very elitist snobs who want to protest their elitist interest, that is why there is no bar extention or decent mass- transit system. Most likely this is why they don't want Hab 4 Hum. I work on a suicide hotline in marin, the county has the highest rate in the nation go figure, and I tell those people if their lives are that shallow then killing themselves is a good thing. Always do what you can in small ways to spite Marinites. They have enough money to deserve it. No doubt that a certain portion of people there (or anywhere) could be considered hyprocrites for going against stated beliefs when it's "in their back yard." So to say. Though it is also possible that there are legitimate concerns involving traffic - not from the residents that would live there, but for the construction! If you look at the difficulty of getting construction permits in many upper class areas, you'll find that the people there do not like ANY major construction projects as this can cause major disruptions to a residential area that is not designed for this type of traffic. Also, all statistics I can find indicate that Clark County in Las Vegas is the leader for Suicide in the US, and that Marin doesn't even rate on any list I can find. I live in Marin but I'm in the underclass, poor. I've lived in Marin since 1991. This just shows that so called affluent or wealthy "liberals" or "progressives" can be just as SNOBBY as their wealthy republican couterparts (I know, I grew up in an affluent republican town). This situation is a case of NIMBYism.....Not In My Back Yard. These type of people are all for something progressive like H4H as long as it's not in their "back yard", as long as it is far away. Marin is widely acknowledged as the wealthiest county in California, and like I said, whether you call yourself liberal or conservative or whatever, you can still be a f*ckin' SNOB. Already in the '60s and '70s, Marin County was known for being stricken by the 'gang plank syndrome'. Those that lived there didn't want anyone else to move in. Wow! What a surprise! I am not trying to defend Marin snobs....but Marin liberals are no different that the rest of liberals the world over.... Liberals are all a bunch of brain-damaged, useful idiots, opposed to the death penalty but pro-abortion, against new development but pro illegal immigration and affordable housing for illegals, etc. etc, etc.... no matter where they live or their financial status. That's liberals for you! No surprise there.... I was born and raised in Marin County so I feel qualified to answer this question. It is true that people in Marin tend to be liberal. I know I am. But a lot of the so-called liberals also do things that are not very cricket, like drive SUVs and build giant McMansions and consume lots of resources. Certainly this is not true of everyone in Marin, and it is certainly not unique to Marin (Los Angeles is full of plenty of "limosine liberals"). But I do think Marin has changed over the years. Marin used to be a real hippie county. Now there are still some old hippies around, but a lot of new people have come in. They tend to be very rich (dotcommers from silicon valley) and I think for them being liberal is more of a lifestyle choice than a real commitment to moral values. |
