101 south metered? |
Travel Info driving home from san fransisco today I observed the Amber Alert Sign the said, "starting tomorrow the 101 south will be metered." does anybody know what this means? Travel Tips it's similar to the metering lights in the Bay Bridge. They put them at off ramps to meter cars entering the freeway. It's like a stop sign basically; the light allows one or two cars per light, the sign at the metering light will indicate how many cars can go per light. It will add time to get on the freeway, but overall they make traffic on the freeway flow a lot smoother with less stop and go type traffic. But it's only effective when all the on ramps have them. Pretty much every on ramp in San Diego and most of SoCal has them and it makes traffic flow a lot smoother on the freeway, it's still heavy but moving at a constant 30-50 mph rather than slowing down then speeding up then slowing down and so on. Also usually they only run them during rush hour, so make sure they are even on before you stop b/c sometimes people will stop and wait at the light when the damn thing isn't even on. Others no but crap i use that road like all the time email me if you find out Metering is a method used to space out the cars entering a freeway. At On-Ramps and entrance points there are basically signals that allow 1-2 cars go for each cycle(Green Light). This is supposed to help traffic flow. Not sure if this is common in SF but in LA this is very common. We have them all over the place in the East Bay. |
