Have you had experience staying at San Francisco Travelodge @ Market Street? |
Travel Info If the experience was bad, can you recommend a good motel between the rates from USD50 to USD70. Travel Tips When I was in San Fran, I stayed at the Travelodge @ Fisherman's Wharf. It is only a few blocks from the ferries to Alcatraz, Ghiradelli Chocolate factory, and the cable cars. I am sure the cost is over $100 a night but it was nice. They also have a shuttle that will pick you up and take you to the Gray Bus Lines depot so to go on different tours. I liked the city tour. I would not bother with Muir Woods although the bus ride takes you across the Golden Gate Bridge. Others I've seen that Travelodge many times, but I have (thankfully) no need to stay there. It's next to the 101 Freeway off-ramp. The neighborhood is quite seedy and gritty... but on the plus side, there's a subway station nearby and a lot of restaurants. Though any place under $100.00 in San Francisco is highly suspect. It's the second most expensive city in America (only New York City is worse), after all. For $50.00...you'll likely endure dirty rooms, loud noises. as well as the ocassional police raid. So, I'd keep my expectations low if you do decide on a Travelodge, either at this location or anywhere else in the city. Absolutely ghetto do not stay there. Its scares me just looking at it . You would be safer staying in a youth hostile. Try some of the motor lodges on lombard street they are still noisy but they are cleaner and safer. I think you can find a place for just over $100 $70 will be close to impossible. That part of Market Street is bums, drugs, x-rated and crime ridden. Don't stay there. The hotel itself isn't bad but the neigbhorhood is rotten during the day and even worse at night. Try any hotel on Lumbard St. I lived at the Park Hotel on Sutter street. It is downtown. Pretty safe and you'll be close to everything. Very few bums. It is 200$/week now. TV, refrig. No daily maid service. You must get ready to hear SF's most popular phrase: "Spare change". SF is the most bum ridden city in America. Even in NYC, you can go a whole month without hearing it. I counted once in SF.....17 times in one hour. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ Look up the comments by other travelers on this site. It's not too far from Civic Center. But it is South of Market. It is in a rough area frequented by the homeless and street persons. If you stay there, don't go out at night. During the day, it's OK so long as you know where you are going and keep your wits about you. It's located conveniently near the BART and Muni Metro (underground) stations on Market St. It's near the library, City Hall, Asian Art Museum. There is an excellent asian restaurant on 7th St. -- just south of Mission -- that we used to go to for lunch. I worked in a city-leased building nearby. A huge new Federal building is being constructed nearby on 7th St. & Mission on what was once the site of the old Greyhound Terminal. What about Seal Rock Inn? Then you would catch the #38 Muni Limited into downtown SF. It's right out by the beach at the end of the #38-Limited line (or #38 Pt. Lobos on weekends). It's out in the Richmond residential district near Ocean Beach. If you don't mind the damp foggy weather, it's OK. Maybe you'll be lucky and hit it on some lovely sunny days. It's a nice quiet neighborhood and New Chinatown is on Clement St. You just get off the Geary bus at 6th Ave. and walk one block over. Or you can catch the #18 to Stonestown Shopping Center or in the other direction to the Legion of Honor Art Museum near the Lincoln Park Golf course. I would stay out of town if that is all you have to spend. If the bum / drunk scene is what you are going for then yea- any cheap motel will do. Some good advice here re the Travelodge (although the neighborhood is not quite as bad as they paint it, it is right next to a freeway entrance). It's *not* the one that's South of Market. The Golden Gate Hotel looks nice; again, it's on a very busy street but is just a few minutes away from Union Square, good access to buses and BART. You'll find cheaper motels on Lombard Street, but public transportation is more difficult there. If you have a rental car, no problem; almost all of them have parking. If you're interested in seeing the Haight, and can spring a little more, the Red Victorian Inn is quite the place. It's right on Haight Street, the rooms are all decorated in different funky fashion, nice cafe, some rooms around $100 with multi-day discounts. http://www.redvic.com/rooms.html... |
