Why is the bay area california the best place to live? |
Travel Info although pricey I wouldn't want to live anywhere else Travel Tips Hey, it's all about our favorite OCD Detective: Adrian Monk. Seriously, I've lived in Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and Southern California. I like each of those places enormously. And I think we're blessed to live in such a prosperous and beautiful continent like North America. But no matter where I go, the Bay Area is always home. It is where I can lazily sip a glass of red wine on a terrace overlooking the bustling Ferry Building at sunset. It is where I can go to nightclubs without worrying about whether my clothes or shoes are expensive enough. It is where I can drive 10 minutes from a forest of skyscrapers to an actual skyscraper-sized forest. It is where the fog creates an almost mystical "floating world" as the buildings peer out of the clouds. It is where a seemingly calm day can quickly turn into an afternoon of ad-hoc street protests and chaos. From the 'Road Runner' horns of the BART trains as it passes through the East Bay suburbs to the Byzantine churches of Stanford University... the Bay Area continues to enthrall me with its charm and magnetism. It's not about quality of life indexes, crime rates, or cost of living. To me, the connection runs much deeper than that.The Bay Area is a feeling of having roots. It is my "polis" (not as the crude English translation of "city"... but in the sense used by the Greeks: a special relationship between a person and their hometown/region). It's way too expensive, there's a lot of snobs of one type or another being that it's an aberrantly over educated population in general, and a catastrophic earthquake can happen at ANY time with no forewarning because modern geologic science can't come up with a way to predict them Life-long Bay Area resident I think it's the best place to live because no matter what you want to do, you can do it here or somewhere around here. We have all 4 major sports, 7 teams within 2 hours of each other. We also have good weather here so playing sports isn't hard. The traffic can get bad but it's nothing compared to Southern California. Also we have plently of lakes to go to, Tahoe is only a 3 hour drive and if you diversity, you're going to be happy as we have a mix of everyone here. And not only are there big cities like SF, OAK & SJ, but there are also smaller communities away from all that noise. Yes it is more expensive but you're paying for living in one of the best parts of the country. Have you ever lived anywhere else? B/c there are other places that are just as great as the Bay Area. I was born and raised there and have lived in Southern CA the last six years and Northern CA is not any better than Southern CA overall. Both places have good things and bad things about them and I think they end up being pretty much the same. And many stereotypes that Northern Californian's have about SoCal are not true. People in SoCal are just as friendly and down to earth as people in the Bay Area and some people in the Bay Area are just as stuck up and pretentious as some people in SoCal. There are things NorCal has that SoCal doesn't and vice versa. Of course it all depends on what you like, if you prefer warm beaches over forests then SoCal is better, but of course others would have it the other way around. But all in all both places are great. The Bay Area is great for many reasons. The scenery, both natural and man-made, is spectacular with all the hills, mountains, water, city, bridges, ect.... It's a very cosmopolitan and sophisticated area. SF is a very unique city and is architectually stunning. Some people think it has great weather, which it does compared to most of the country. Most of the people here are pretty cool and friendly. There's a lot of different things to do and many cool locations nearby like Tahoe, Monterey, the Northern CA coastline, ect... Good jobs with good pay here as well. But there are also many things I don't like about the Bay Area. Housing is way too expensive for what it is. People in general are pretty cool but some people, espcially in SF and Berekely are just so full of themselves and pretentious. They think they are so cultured and open minded and act like some wannabe European. There too obsessed with politics and activism, just as much as some people in LA are too obsessed with celebrities and fashion. Marin County and San Mateo are pretty pretentious and snobby; the East Bay I think has the coolest people. Traffic is horrible, 2nd worst in the nation after their Southern CA cousin, LA. In my opinion the weather sucks, it's cold in winter. In summer you are constantly going between 70-100 degrees and it's freezing at night in the summer there. And SF is so foggy and windy for so much of the time. This blog I came across sums up everything I dislike about the Bay Area: http://www.welikesheep.com/archives/2004... The Bay Area is my hometown and I will always love it. I love the A's, my family and friends, my hometown of Walnut Creek, and many other things that make the Bay Area unique. But I also love where I am at now, San Diego, just as much for some of the same reasons and for different reasons. I don't think either one is better than the other but both are great in their own ways. You really should try living elsewhere for a while and see what it's like. But no doubt about it the Bay Area is a great place to live and I will always love it, but other places can be just as great depending on the person. |
