Travel Tips
you always need a jacket in sf, all year round. I remember going to the july 4th fireworks in SF one year. it was so cold that I had to buy a jacket on the street.

beach - it is okay during the day, probably 70-low 80s. on a cloudy day though it can get cold.

It's usually pretty cold there year round and it's foggy during the summer. The only time it's warm there is during a heatwave in Sept or Oct when it's about 100 degrees inland. The warmest temperature ever recorded at Ocean Beach was like 86 degrees. And it's never warm enough to go in the water, usually stays about 55 or below in the ocean. Santa Cruz would probably be warmer b/c it faces south but the water anywhere in Northern CA is never warm enough to swim in w/o a wetsuit.
We have Indian (late) summers. September and October are the best times to visit San Francisco's beaches. That's when the sunbathers come out to catch a little tan and play volleyball. Here's a rundown on the beaches:

Baker Beach is relatively protected by the Presidio's cliffs and there's a nude section.

Ocean Beach is vast and open, but it gets very windy. And it's probably the most dirty of the beaches because of the drinking parties and bonfires.

China Beach is small and suitable for young families.

Aquatic Beach is the closest one to Fisherman's Wharf. It's also small and faces the bay rather than the ocean (so it's very calm).

In Marin County, Rodeo Beach is a place to start/end a hike into the Headlands. Muir Beach and Stinson Beach are beautiful white sand stretches. Those beaches are great for seashell hunters and scuba divers.

To the South, Pacifica's beach is windy and cold all year long. Half Moon Bay is nice. Santa Cruz is Northern California's premier surfing beach, as it has the warmest waters.
