Anyone know where the 'Save The Steps' steps in the Tales Of The City books are?

Travel Info
I've had a 15 year love affair with Amistead Maupin's Tales Of The City and this year I'm visiting San Francisco to see all the locations in the books.

I haven't been able to find the real location of the steps that are the basis of a 'Save Our Steps' campaign in the books.

Does anyone know where I'll be able to find them?

Travel Tips
From the discription of Barbary Lane, the closest approximation is probably the telegraph hill and the Filbert steps.

And here is some info on Armsted Maupin and tales of the city from my friend Hank's website!
