Taking trip to San Fran in April - Recommendations?

Travel Info
Group of 20 something girls taking a 5 day trip to San Fran in mid-April - what are some must sees or places to avoid that you have had from personal experience?

Travel Tips
First of all, get a map of San Francisco. It is the easiest to follow in California.
I had stayed there for almost a month in 2005. First of all, dont forget to take the ride in the cable car. It is at Powell Street. The Visitors area is down at this Street also.
Be ready with your camera as the cable car takes a pause over the famous postcard view of Alcatraz! It stops directly at the Fishermans Wharf. Have lunch at the Pier. After lunch, you can take a walk down the street, there are souvenirs in this area but cheaper down at Chinatown.
Me and my friend had taken the double decker tour of the city. It passes over Union Square, the gate to Chinatown, Moscone Convention Center, the place where Levi's originated, and other areas. It is about $25.00. There are other tours available at the area of Fisherman's wharf. You can probably reserve first before lunch and be on time for it after lunch.
There is another tour of Alcatraz, the wineries over at Sonoma and Napa Valley, Monterey, Sausalito but they are a bit expensive.
Go to the Golden gate bridge. There is a Chinese and Japanese garden over there.
At the Powell street, there is a BART station there. Try riding it and take a round trip to the Contra Costa County which includes Oakland, Martinez, Concord, Pittsburgh, Antioch and a lot more.
I would recommend shopping at Daly City because there are more parking areas over there and it is for free. Parking is expensive in San Francisco. You can just take a ride of the Muni bus over there. You can transfer from one bus to another as long as it is within 2 hours of your ticket. KEEP YOUR TICKET!
Go to Yahoo travel, to travel guides and to San Francisco. There are the top 10 attractions down the page, see its websites, locations and schedules. There is also a slideshow of San Francisco.
As for souvenir, look for a miniature cable car! Remember that the tax over at the Bay area is the most expensive in California, it is now 8.75% compared to 8.5% in 2005.

Others
Avoid the touristy areas like pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf. If you need to get souviners for folks at home Chinatown has a great selection and much cheaper than the shops in the tourist areas. Also, I would avoid the Haight Ashbury area, dirty, drug infested, and full of wanna be street kids in from the burbs trying way too hard to be cool

If you want to shop check out the Mission. Valencia and Mission between 16th and 21st has lots of cool shops and boutiques and great food and drink.

Hayes Valley [Hayes between Gough and Octavia] and Noe Valley [24th between Church and Castro], the Upper Fillmore [Fillmore between Geary and Jackson] are also great places to shop and just hang out.

If you are going to be in town on Friday kick off your girls weekend by going to women only day at Kabuki Springs and Spa.

Check out this website for a list of must see places in San Francisco, they also have cool hotels if you are looking for a place to stay.

When you arrive, stop by the visitor's center which is down in the Hallidie Plaza at Powell & Market St. (Cable car turnaround is there). Go down the escalator or steps to the lower level, walk pass the Cable Car food stand umbrella tables, and you'll see a reception center right underneath the street. You should start there.

Several people should buy a muni map, get MUNI Passports at the kiosk up at street level near the turnaround -- get one good for several days (allows you to hop on & off the all MUNI vehicles including cable car and gets you all over the city with it).

Crowded busses or cable cars: Bring your cell phones and pack the chargers -- maybe some would like to bring a camera for pictures -- program phone numbers of others in group just in case you separate or get separated because you couldn't all get on the same crowded bus.. If group needs to split up and take the next bus, agree on a meeting place at the destination.

Pickpockets -- Be careful of that especially on crowded busses and shops. Keep your handbags closed and in front of you.

Keep alert and you should all have a good time.
If you guys like shopping then you have to go to UNION SQUARE!!! otherwise go to the golden gate bridge and alcatraz. You can also visit the pier (39)! I grew up in San Francisco and I went to Union Square almost every week. It has all the department stores as well as small boutiques! Bring your walking shoes because you will be walking a lot!!!! Have FUN!!!
Cost Plus...near Pier 39...for all kinds of affordable jewelry and other items. A fun place.
Do see Pier 39, touristy or not, it's nice and you'll see the seals. Alcatraz Tour was interesting. Walk , eat and shop Grant Ave (Chinatown) it's cheap and good. Walk the bridge! Go to Golden Gate Park on the weekend. Rent skates, it's such fun and you can go to the DeYoung Museam cheap and it is facinating. Take a walk thru the Fairmont Hotel. All inexpensive things to do. Have a great time.
Lived there for ten years on a shoestring budget. I never tired of doing those things.
i suggest going to berkely for sure , it is the best place in the bay area. visit the university near downtown , go to 4 th street shopping , walk around elmwood, and go hiking in or picnic in tilden park.

there is a local transit subway called bart. you can use asby stop for elmwood ,downtown berkeley stop for University and tilden park, and north berkely for 4th street.
4th street is pretty hidden and in a industrial part of town but once you get there you will be very very suprised. there are lots of nice shops. dont expect to afford any of it though. the shops are highly deluxe and sell sheets of paper for 900 dollars!!.
