Travel Info Where are the best places to shop in Berkeley? ... Also how dog-freindly is the city? Travel Tips The two main shopping strips in Berkeley are Shattuck Avenue (near the University of California) and 4th Street (close to the I-80 freeway). There's a smaller area of shops on Solano Avenue in North Berkeley. Telegraph Avenue is looking pretty grim nowadays. There are some cheap eats that are still worth a stop, but there's little in the way of an anchor store. The last major store, Cody's Books, recently moved to 4th Street. Generally, there are few chain stores in Berkeley. However, if you need your mall fix, the full service Hilltop Mall in Richmond is a short drive away... and right door is Emeryville, which has a decent mid-range mall (Bay Street). You don't have to worry about anti-animal attitudes. Quite the opposite, in fact. You're expected to treat your pet well. In Berkeley (and West Hollywood in Southern California), you're considered the "guardian" of your pet rather than the "owner." Others Your dog will need to be on a leash. There is a nice main street for shopping and then there's the hippy sub-culture street up by the park. It's a very diverse city. I would not want to leave my dog out in front of a book store, or shop. Do a little reseach with mapquest and where you are staying. I did all public transit when i was there, and it wasn't very dog friendly. Just go to telegraph and check it out. It's a pretty good place for dogs, lots of dog owners around and lots of parks. Then go get some pizza at Zachary's in Oakland, its just a short bus ride away yum!! |
