Where should I live if I move to Salinas, California?

Travel Info
I've been offered a job in Salinas with a theatre, and I think I might take it. The pay isn't fantastic, but it's a great opportunity. My question is, where should I live? I'd like to live on my own (with my dog), somewhere that's slightly rural, but I really cannot afford more than $500 rent. Any suggestions?

Travel Tips
I don't think you will be able to find a place to live anywhere close to Salinas for $500. Also, Monterey County is not a pet friendly county. You will find it hard to find any place that will allow a dog. Beware of people that send in the direction of Castroville, Chualar and such as they are poor ugly towns with high crime. If $500 is your max to spend you might want to consider sharing a place with others. Sorry. Source(s): me...I used to be a property manager in Monterey less than one year ago.

Other Travel Tips
if you have a car, possible prunedale or chualar

small ruralish towns, not very expensive, but about 15 or ten minutes away from salinas
