What is the name of that Street in San Fransisco? |
Travel Info I'm looking for the name of that really steep street in San Fransisco. The one that appears in the Monk opening song in the end. Travel Tips Lombard street. Plan to wait in line to drive down it, and have a driver that could care less about seeing it. It really is crooked and steep. Others Lombard ! It's the real crooked street !! I don't watch Monk - but I'm from SF. Could be Gough, could be McAllister, could be any one of a bunch. If it's the crooked street, though - it's Lombard. If you mean the crooked street that is often shown in movies that take place in San Francisco then it's Lombard. That's Lombard Street, arguably San Francisco's most famous street. Lombard Street is best known for one block on Russian Hill between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, in which the roadway has eight sharp turns (or switchbacks) that have earned the street the distinction of being "the crookedest street in the United States." The Powell-Hyde cable car line stops at the top of this block. It's a great place to take pictures. The switchback design, first suggested by property owner Carl Henry and instituted in 1922, was born out of necessity in order to reduce the hill's natural 27掳 slope which was too steep for most vehicles to climb and a serious hazard to pedestrians used to a more reasonable sixteen-degree incline. The speed limit is a mere 5 mph (10 km/h) on the crooked section, which is about 1/4 mile (400 m) long. The crooked section of the street is reserved for one-way traffic traveling east (downhill), and is paved with bricks. Lombard I think... There are a lot of steep streets here but some of the best views are on Lombard. It's The Street San Francisco is Famous For..! LOMBARD STREET..! |
