Depending on how long you are staying in SF; there is soooo much a person can do before you leave. I work at Fisherman's Wharf, which is a large tourist area that surrounds Pier 39 which is a must see; a plus is that you can catch the ferry to Alcatraz from there or take a tour of SF by ferry and get a very good view of the Golden Gate Bridge (GGB) if you happen to be there on a sunny day. Since you are in the wharf area, you should also stop by at Ghirardelli Square for their famous chocolate and ice cream sundaes, just two blocks away from there is the famous Buena Vista Restaurant and they have their famous irish coffees. For the athletic person, you can rent a bicycle and ride over the GGB and catch the ferry back to Pier 39. Over the other side of the GGB, there is a beautiful small city: Sausalito which has breathtaking views of the SF skyline and lots of things to do over there as well. Tons of cheap trinkets and lots of different foods are found in Chinatown. Coit Tower is fun but you do have to pay to see the view from the top of the tower. If you are a shopper, or with a shopper you should visit the Cow Hollow/Union Street for smaller boutiques, also a interesting place to shop and eat is the Haight Ashbury; the larger shopping area is located in Downtown with the big malls- Macy's, Nordstrom as well as the high-end designer stores. There is also Golden Gate Park which is a long stretch of green with museums, views, and a lake in which you can rent paddle boats or pedal boats by the hour, which is relaxing. If you are getting around by car, I also recommend that you stop by Twin Peaks which will give you a fabulous view of Market St. and Castro Street as well as the city. You can drive down the Pacific Coast Highway to Carmel/Monterey where the view going there is beautiful. There are also 2 beaches in SF, one is near the SF Zoo and the other closer to the Presidio area. This response is getting awful long but if you would like more of what to do/see, you can email me @judybabie@yahoo.com
