Can I take two huge checkin luggages on the BART in San Francisco? |
Travel Info I am flying in to San Francisco Airport internationally and have two big check in luggages. I plan on using the BART to take me to West Oakland. I have never been on the BART before and was wondering if they have repositories for luggage as I would not want to inconvenience other BART riders with my luggage. Travel Tips It is very courteous of you to consider the needs of the other passengers. However, the vast majority of San Franciscans are "adult" about airport related luggage on the subway. Each car on the train will have an open area near the doors (for wheelchairs and seniors). I doubt anyone will object if you use that area for oversized luggage. You might run into some luggage issues getting off in West Oakland. The huge faregates at the SFO Airport station are luggage friendly. However, all the other stations in the system have standard sized ones, so you might need to get a station agent to open the side door. Others I hope you will have someone who can assist you along. I had a large older model brand new Samsonite suitcase (kind with wheels and a retractable strap for pulling it along). No problem exept on escalators. Probably need two people to move both pieces quickly when the doors of the BART open so you can get yourself and the luggage on & off before the door closes.. I believe the West Oakland Station is elevated and you would need to go down to street level. OK if an elevator is available and working. At the underground Embarcadero BART station in SF: It was easy exiting through one of the side gates instead of at the turnstile. When we tried to get up the escalator, that posed a problem. Those moving steps aren't made to accommodate big suitcases with four little wheels on the bottom pulled by a strap (my husband was ahead of me handling the suitcase as if he had a dog on the leash). He must have been tired from the long trip and turned-off his brain. Luckily, another commuter near us saw my problem and saved our luggage from being scratched up when it started to fall. If the elevator is working, maybe you would use that. Up on Market Street, we had to catch the #38 MUNI home. Less aisle space in the MUNI. By then it was almost commute hour and the big suitcase took up almost half the aisle. People were very nice-- even when I was distracted trying to take a picture and the suitcase rolled into another passenger standing in the aisle. Afterward, we gave that suitcase away and bought 2 smaller ones having only used it once. I would believe so, considering that they actually have a stop at the Airport. I guess it would matter on the size of it as well. So I guess my answer is... yes, to a certain extent. depends how crowded the train is- just find yourself a corner and keep the bags on the floor.
