Golden gate bridge? |
Travel Info what is the golden gate bridge made out of ? could the thing it is made out of break in a big earthquake? Travel Tips It is made of steel. Steel facts: Made in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and shipped through the Panama Canal. Total weight of steel: 83,000 tons (75,293,000 kg). Good info here: http://gocalifornia.about.com/cs/sanfran... More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/golden_gate... The bridge foundation is planted to be earthquake proof and the bridge did survive the 1989 earthquake. But practically speaking, I am not sure whether it is actually earthquake proof. Others idk whats its made out of but its probably earthquake safe, being in sf & all we have ALOT of earthquakes even if they arent all that big They used huge cables to support the steel framework. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/golden_gate... made of steel and yes it could break if the earthquake was big enough. It is made of steel. The probability of it breaking in an earthquake is fairly slim. It was built to be able to sway with the winds and earthquakes. Maximum transverse deflection, center span: 27.7 ft Maximum downward deflection, center span: 10.8 ft Maximum upward deflection, center span: 5.8 ft As an example of how the Bridge is built to move, during the winter storms in 1982, the main span bowed approximately 6 to 7 feet http://goldengatebridge.org/research/fac... It would take such a big earthquake to break that bridge, that you probably wouldn't want to survive the devestation anyway. |
