Why? Well, when it was built in the 1930's,(completed in 1937) it was the most modern steel bridge built in the world, and spanned the widest amount of water up to that time in history (1,280 feet across the entrance to San Francisco Bay). It is also a classic design for a suspension bridge, and one of the most identifiable structures in the world. The later longer bridges built in Asia just don't have the silhouette of the Golden Gate Bridge, or their history.

If you ment infamous, that is because so many people commit suicide off of it.
Its red and stylish.
There was no such bridge existed in the world at that
time, when the Golden Gate Bridge was built.
I dont know the exact reason, but one reason I think is that its the gate that separates the Pacific Ocean and America!
There are several reasons.
-it is beutiful
- in a nice location
-it was built during the great depression
-it was built under very harsh circustances
like wind, fog, salt water, cold,
-it was built in a very strong and dangerous curret, in teh deepest part of the bay.
-it was funded entirely buy the city and its residents, unlike current state funded projects.
-it has a very unique color, international orange.
-it was the longest bridge in the world once.
- it withstood the loma prieta earthquake in 1989

Because it was made of mexican steel ;)
