Best places to stop on CA Highway 1? |
Travel Info We're planning a road trip from San Francisco to San Diego/Mexico on Highway 1. Does anyone have any suggestions on places to eat/stay/see? Has any one done this before? How long does it take? We're estimating 4 days. Travel Tips How long it takes depends how how much time you will spend stopping along the way. 4 days seems like a good amount of time. My recommendations: Visit some of the world class wineries along the way. There are wonderful wineries all along your route: Santa Cruz, Monterey, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and San Diego. For info on wineries, winery maps, and wine tasting coupons go to: http://www.cheers2wine.com If you are in San Luis Obispo on a Thursday night, they have a really fun Farmers' Market in downtown SLO. Just south of San Luis Obispo, Sycamore Mineral Springs is a nice place to stop for a night. They have a private jacuzzi on the balcony of every room. You can choose from hot mineral springs water or fresh water. This resort also has a fantastic restaurant and spa. In Pismo Beach it's a blast to rent a 4 wheeler (by the hour or the day) and ride the sand dunes. You can drive your car (and even camp) right on the beach as well. There are so many things to do in San Diego. It's a beautiful coastal city with many outdoor activities: kayaking, bay cruises, beach bonfires, hiking, biking, riding a gondola, and more. Check out this site for more details: http://www.sandiego-romantics.... Have a great trip. Others Hearst Castle, Pt Lobos, Pebble Beach, Carmel - you can whip through in a day or drift cruise - enjoy Heading north from San Diego... La Jolla; Laguna Beach; Newport Beach; Manhattan Beach; Venice Beach; Santa Monica; Malibu; Santa Barbara; San Simeon (Herst Castle); Big Sur; Monterey/Carmel (17 Mile Drive - scenic, nature); Santa Cruz; San Francisco; Sausalito; Stinson Beach; Bodega Bay; Gualala; Mendocino; and there are a ton of cute towns north of Fort Bragg up to the California/Oregon border! I would recommend driving from north to south... its easier to pull off onto scenic overlooks and you are closer to the edge of the beautiful coastal cliffs to see the beauty of the beaches and ocean. Heading north, it makes it more challenging to see. 12 year California resident and huge advocate of ensuring everyone who visits falls in love with our beautiful state! Check out San Simeon and find the Madonna Inn...make reservations ahead but don't miss it...find Andersons pea soup place....Half moon bay has the most fantastic tidepool beach..don't miss Monterrey and the aquarium there..if you like that kind of thing...it is probably the best aquarium you will ever see...My husband says go to Zuma and Malibu Beach. Have fun and be safe When you are in the Big Sur region, stop at the Lucia Lodge for lunch or at least coffee. The view from their dining area is absolutely stunning and the food is very good too! http://www.seetheglobe.com/modules/wfrev... |
