What places are fun in San Fransisco? |
Travel Info I am going to San Fransisco in April, and was wondering, what are some fun things to do and see there? thanks for all your help! Travel Tips There is no one answer. I guess it depends on your age, your interests, and your budget, and whether or not you were here before. San Francisco is a wonderful city. There are plenty of things that you can do no matter your age or budget. I think sightseeing will be a great treat. If you have never taken a rapid transit train, take BART , which runs under San Francisco to San Francisco Airport in the South, and through a tube under the Bay to the East. Maybe you would like to go over and walk around University of California campus in Berkeley? If you have never taken streetcars, don't miss the dozen or so historic old streetcars that run on the Embarcadero (near the waterfront)--old cars from New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Spain, Portugal and Italy, etc. And don't forget the cable cars !..., how about a ferry boat ride? Runs frequently during the day from the Ferry Building at the foot of Market street past alcatraz and Angel Island. You can walk around the shops and have lunch there reasonably. Pier 39 is a refurbished tourist attraction right on the waterfront, and near Fisherman's Wharf. Great for shopping, as well as the restored shopping centers of Ghirardelli Square or The Cannery as well. In San Francisco, there are always concerts, plays, musical shows and nightclubs galore. If you like classical, go over and see if you can get tickets to the SF Symphony or the SF Opera, or the plays or musicals at the Curran or Geary Theatres. I like to take visiting relatives and tourists for a drink up to the bar or restaurants in the big hotels at the top of their building: Fairmont, Mark Hopkins, Saint Francis, or the Hilton, Hyatt or others. It is worth seeing sunset if the weather is not too foggy. If you are younger than I, you might like the rock bars in SoMa, the South of Market area. Depends on your taste. Some are kind of funky, some just strange, so you have to use your own musical judgement. If you like art, you can go to the SFMOMA, (he SF Museum of Modern Art) or the Asian Art Museum, or the Museum of art at the Palace of the Legion of Honor out towards Land's End. Plenty of art galleries and exhibitions at galleries throughout the city. And food........holy cow ...you could try a dozen different restaurants in a week, from the fine cuisine in Chinatown, to Italian in North Beach, to French, German, Spanish and Central-American, to seafood at Fisherman's Wharf, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, Cajun, etc, etc . Depending on your budget, you could spend the whole visit shopping at the fine shops (some expensive!) , but you don't have to buy! Take a trip across the Golden Gate Bridge to visit Marin County. If you like wine, you can take a tour by bus up to the wine country in Napa and Sonoma County. If you love nature, it is all here, from the Ocean to the Bay, to the Presidio, part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, run by the US Park Service. And then there is the Muir Woods and the Redwoods, a day-trip north of the city. Or Golden Gate Park in the west of the city. There are several fine municipal golf courses with spectacular views of the city and the ocean and bay if that is your pleasure. Depending on when in April you are visiting, you could see a Giants game or an A's game over in Oakland. Go to the website of the SF Convention and Visitors Bureau for what is happening the days you are visiting. Good luck. Hope you enjoy yourself. Others Check out Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, and get a chance to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.
