We're thinking of going to San Francisco this summer? What should we do while we're there? |
Travel Info We're going to visit our neighbors who will have just moved out there so they won't be that familiar with the area. We both have kids. I'd like to see other places too that are within driving distance. What should we plan on doing while we are there? Travel Tips Twin peaks: awesome view of the whole skyline Chinatown: go there North Beach: this is the place the beat poets made famous. check out city lights bookstore and kerouac alley. this is the italian district as well. one of my favorite parts of the city. go here without the kids. Fishermans Wharf: if you leave here without having a fresh crab and a bowl of clam chowder you'll regret it. you can go inside, but it's fun to hop from crabstand crabstand. Golden Gate Park: if you want to relax and have a pleasant stroll then go here. There are some nice lakes. kids can play. Downtown: shopping, shopping, and more shopping. also a great symphony. Mission District: best mexican food on the planet. just south of downtown market street (called 'soma') you'll find the following gems: museum of modern art, yerba buena gardens, the metreon. kids usually love the metreon. Tips: dress for warm weather but BE READY for cold weather, fog, and wind. Driving is insane. watch for one-way streets and pedestrians. just pay for parking somewhere and save yourself the headache. good neighborhoods can turn into sketchy neighborhoods REAL FAST in downtown area, so keep your wits around you. try out one of the restaurants that sit atop hotels (e.g., the grand view) on a clear day. Others You can go to places such as the Golden Gate Bridge/Park, Alcatrez (take ferry on Fisherman's Wharf), Pier 39, Chinatown, Japantown, Union Square, and San Francisco Shopping Centre. Most of these places you can take the Muni. I advise you to take public transportation because it's difficult to find parking spaces. I had been to San Francisco in 2005 just in time for the Thanksgiving and the Christmas season. Buy a map before your trip or just buy it at Walgreens. Plan your trip well so that you get the best out of your money! The map is so easy to follow. It is the only map which you can really understand in California since San Francisco is quite small compared to LA and San Diego. Dont forget that the tax in San Francisco is 8 .5% , i just dont know if there was an increase to 8.75%! Better check this one. The cost of living here is very expensive. It is definitely hard to park in downtown San Francisco and expensive too. Even its residents dont bring their car downtown. Powell Street is your landmark. Start your trip with the ride of the cable car and going down at the Visitors corner. The cable car goes to the Fisherman's wharf! Before going there, it will take a pause at the famous postcard view of Alcatraz. Dont forget to bring out your camera. Once you reach Fisherman's wharf for lunch, first reserve for a double decker trip of the city! Once you finish lunch, then you will just be in time for the trip. There are also souvenirs there which you can buy while waiting. The trip of the city tour ends at Chinatown area. Explore that area too. There are also souvenirs in that place. You can also alot a day at Union Square where Macy's and other signature shops are. Other trips include trip to Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, the wine counties ( Napa and Sonoma), trip to Monterey and Sausalito. At Powell street also, ride the BART which is the Bay Area Rapid Transport System which brings you from San Francisco to the Contra Costa County. Take a round trip and explore the areas. Contra Costa County includes Concord, Pittsburgh, Antioch, Martinez, La Fayette, Oakland, etc. Dont forget to have a lunch over at Berkeley. My friend brought me there! There is a restaurant there which faces the bay bridge! It has a wonderful view of the place. Dont forget that parking is terrible in Oakland and crime rate there is high. Daly City is where the residents go for shopping since parking is bigger and free. Try to eat at In & Out burger! San Jose is also included in the bay area! There are outlet stores there. Dont forget that you can make the most out of your trip if you plan well and make a schedule. Buy maps of San Francisco and the nearby areas you want to explore. The streets there are hilly. There is a street near Geary where the street really goes up and down. Dont forget to park well and dont forget your handbreaks! Check the weather at my yahoo. You can compare your weather at present with San Francisco. I monitor 20 cities all over the world at the same time through my messenger. Go to yahoo travel, then go to travel guides, click San Francisco. At the bottom of the page, you will find the top 10 popular attractions in San Francisco and you will also find the slideshow of the place at the topmost page. Have a nice trip! |
