What are some must see/eat places in monterey/big sur area? |
Travel Info i'll be there with a few friends in late June. we are in our mid-20s and are looking for a fun and unique trip! we will be there for 6 days/5 nights and what to see monterey/big sur/san fran. and some wine country. got any tips? Travel Tips Nepenthe is a must. It is a restaurant in Big Sur, just about 20-30 minutes or so down Hwy 1 below Monterey. I recommend the Ambrosia Burger and the views are gorgeous. http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/ If you like Chinese, Chef Jia is excellent in San Francisco. It is right next to the famous House of Nanking but at half the price and you won't have to wait. The Honey Chili Chicken is delicious. In Monterey, we ate at a couple of Mexican restaurants. One was El Palomar and it was delicious. They have a number of fresh seafood dishes if that interests you. Full service bar as well. Turtle Bay Taqueria is another recommendation...very casual and inexpensive. Others If you are looking for a relaxed, top-of-the-line dinner, I would recommend the Old Bath House. It is on Monterey Bay, and it is a gourmet meal with a great view. Dress is what I would call "nice casual". Food is the best, entrees I recall are $25-$35 per person, to give you a ball park. Call in advance for reservations, they only seat about 30 people, I remember. Of course, the Monterey Aquarium. Ventana in Big Sur is pricey but elegant. Take a walk in Pt. Lobos. Monterey has a nice restaurant built out over the water, so you can see the fish below you. Carmel is loaded with good restaurants. Biggest problem there to my taste is that the place leans toward yuppies. Wine country is really further north. If you've a taste for history, Larkin House Museum in Monterey. Drive around Pacific Grove. Vista just as nice and free vs. 17 mile drive. See the Butterfly sanctuary there too. Ano Nuevo cool for seeing Elephant Seals. To maximize time you can wine taste in Monterey area. If you are going to Napa. Stay in Napa area Artesa etc..... Clam Chowder in a breadbowl! Walk down the wharf (Monterey) and many vendors sell them. You usually can have a sample first. There are also quite a few seafood restaurants with bay views. |
