Beaches in San Francisco CA?

Travel Info
My Friend is visiting from NY and we'd like to take her to a beach that looks like the ones in Southeren CA. If you know of any near the San Francisco area please let me know. We need a veiw of the ocean. We are willing to travel in Northren CA but we really do not want to go South. Thanks for your help. Serious answers only please.

Travel Tips
Go to Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. Its less than an hour away, and usually much warmer than San Francisco beaches. Plus there is the whole boardwalk thing which is pretty fun. Bring your own food though. They charge like 10 bucks for a crappy hot dog!

The closest beach to San Francisco that's laid out in the "SoCal style" (surfers, volleyball, and boardwalk) is Santa Cruz:

The 75 mile drive down the 101 Freeway and Highway 17 takes just under 1 1/2 hours (if traffic is good).

Alternatively, if your friend is staying in Downtown San Francisco... they could take Caltrain to San Jose ($7.50), and then transfer to Santa Cruz Metro ($4.00). This will add at least one additional hour to your journey, but it's certainly a relaxing and feasible way to do it. For them, it would be similar to going on the LIRR.

santa cruz is 50 miles south of sf-----or half moon bay
Baker Beach, Ocean Beach "look" like SoCal beaches with an expansive view, but can be quite cold.
Here's a "secret" (not really of course). Go to Pt Reyes. Go to the Pt. Reyes State Park/Ranger Station. Hike out the trails ( 3 miles, about) to a stretch of beach called "seven mile beach"...because it is. You will be the only people there...you may see 1 or 2 others. Maybe. Do not go in the water. Rip tides and great white sharks. Other beautiful and always dangerous (waters) beaches North of SF are Rodeo Beach, Tennessee Valley Beach, Muir Beach, Stinson Beach. All North, all great. Have fun!!
Rodeo Beach in the Marin headlands. Go over the Golden Gate bridge and get off at Ft Baker, under the 101 and west along the cliff to the lighthouse then north past the Nike Site to the old Army Barracks and the Beach. The drive has got to be the most scenic in the world
