I'll be coming to San Francisco soon for a week. Where's a good section to live in? |
Travel Info How much do rents average within the city (studio or 1-bedroom apt)? If you're outside how is it taking BART into town? Also how is it overall these days? Travel Tips If you are only staying a week, consider a motel in the Marina District. There is also a motel right across from the SF Zoo, out at the beach. Hear the big cats at nightime, as well as the rumble of the Pacific (about a 1 minute walk away). Others Since you're only staying for a week, there are few options other than hotels. Most landlords expect at least a month's rent, even for temporary sublets. There are all suite hotels like Executive Suites SF and Embassy Suites (in the suburbs of Pleasant Hill and Burlingame), which offer apartment style accomodations. If you're staying for a full week, you can certainly ask for a discount. Sometimes they'll offer you the last night for free. Sometimes they'll say no. http://www.executivesuites-sf.com/... http://www.embassysuites.com/en/es/hotel... http://www.embassysuites.com/en/es/hotel... One cheaper option, with shared kitchens (and sometimes bathrooms) is Residence Club on Nob Hill: http://www.brandoncollege.com/housing/va... If you're taking BART during rush hour (5-8 AM into the city center, 4-7 PM out of the city center), you might have to stand. Otherwise, it should be OK. http://www.bart.gov Caltrain, the peninsula commuter rail, is usually very comfortable. In addition to large seats and tables, there are plugs for laptops. You certainly don't have those on BART. http://www.caltrain.com As the recession continues to recede, San Francisco is regaining some of the self-confidence it lost after the dot-com bust and 9-11. The new Mission Bay campus of UCSF Medical is open. The California Academy of Sciences museum is on-schedule to reopen in 2008 after a massive makeover. A subway line is being built (when it'll actually open is anyone's guess, optimists are hoping for 2012). Silicon Valley is recovering... albeit slowly. And new skyscrapers are going up. These include two 700 feet condo towers under construction, and plans for three office buildings over 1,000 feet on the verge of being approved. At the same time, it's still the old San Francisco, in many ways. Thousands of protestors will march onto the streets at the drop of a hat. Parking is as impossible to find as ever. And that infamous fog can still turn a warm summer day into "Chicago Winter" within a matter of 5 minutes. |
