At what point, south of San Francisco, can you go in the ocean without freezing to death? |
Travel Info You will die of hypothermia in the oceans of San Francisco without a wet suit, but in Orange County, the water is fine. Where is the first beach/city south of SF, where you can actually go in the water? Travel Tips Hi, You can try Santa Cruz beach & Aptos and the beach areas at Sea Cliff. It's not as cold as San Francisco Ocean Beach. Your next best bet is Pismo Beach this can be tollerable without a wet suit. After Pismo, try Gaviota State Beach about 19 miles above Santa Barbara and then Santa Barbara. Once you get south of Pt. Conception the Channel Waters warm up about 10 degrees above San Francisco. I've been diving these waters for 41 years and I can really tell the difference. Others well in santa barabra country the surfers are in the water all the time.. so maybe south of Carmel or somthing. Santa Cruz is doable, though of course not as warm as the southern California beaches. I agree; try Santa Cruz. If you are lucky, the water will be bearable. SF water is too cold, and the undertow will get you as well. Pismo Beach is not near SF. Check out these web pages: http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/cpac.... http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/spac.... It looks like in the Santa Cruz area the ocean averages about 5 deg F warmer than in SF, and in Southern California it's about 12 deg F warmer than in SF. |
