Travel Info I'm 27 from Boston thinking of moving to california...anyone have any advice, input, where to go, etc..Thanks! Travel Tips stay away from SF, San Jose, and San Diego. the cost of living is re-freakin-diculous. Others dont move It really depends on what you like. It is very expensive - even the less desirable areas are costly. California does not really have different seasons. It rains a little in the winter and can be very hot in the summer depending on where you live. Most good paying jobs require a bachelor's degree. If you are looking for an area with plenty of jobs I would recommend San Francisco, San Jose, LA area and San Diego. Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do. If you have more specific questions feel free to email me. It really depends on what you're planning to do for work. If you're in the computer industry you'll want to be near the Silicone Valley (San Jose area). San Francisco has a ton of opportunities and it's a great city to live in, but it's ridiculously expensive! You'd need to have a really good paying job, but if you can afford it, it's worth it for the nightlife, diversity, beautiful location, and myriad of things to do! It's also close to the beach and mountains so whatever you want to do is only a few hours away. If you like smaller towns, check out the Monterey Bay. You'd find a more laid-back style of life and things move more slowly. There are some awesome beach towns (Santa Cruz, Capitola, Monterey, Carmel) but rent is astronomically expensive and there are fewer opportunities for a high paying job ... but they do exist, depending on what you do. I'm a Northern Californian, so I don't know a ton about the L.A. or San Diego area, but if you're more into fashion, appearances, materialism, wealth, etc. then you could check it out down there (yes, I admit I'm a bit biased!) San Luis Obispo is a fun college town about halfway down the coast between Monterey and Santa Barbara. It's a really fun town and would be a great place to live. Although, I hear the rent has gotten pretty bad down there, too. The very northern part of California is mostly made up of really small towns that either began during the gold rush or were farming towns. There are some great little places in the Sierras if you're looking for a really small town and lots of skiing/boarding in the winter and rafting/hiking/boating in the summer. Of course, I'm not sure what type of job opportunities you might find. One of the things that I love most about California is that the people TEND to be a little more open minded and welcoming of differences than in other parts of the country. Of course we have as many problems as other states, but it's really a great place to live. Good luck with your move! Make sure you can afford a high rent!! Also you have to consider the weather. If you want a city with lots of variety, but is not to big, I would suggest San Francisco. It's foggy and rainy some days, but it can also be the perfect temp. If you can't afford the high costs of living in San Francisco, consider living in the suburbs. A lot of people dream of moving to LA, but the truth is, it's HUGE. It literally takes hours to get from place to place. Native San franciscan and lovin it. You may have heard high prices as the deal breaker for San Francisco. As a Bostonian, you would not notice the high prices against the strangeness of that city. A more conservative Californian city is your best bet. San Diego might do, though hot. |
