Which is better: Northern or Southern California? Why?

Travel Info
Well, for me I can't really decide; as I lived in Orange County, CA with my family, from in 1984-1987, and have visited LA and SD counties myriads of times...but I've never been to Northern California at all. My father who's been to San Francisco, said that it was the most beautiful city to he's been in America; although he toured
many states in America; including NY state (along with NYC), New England (including Boston), DC area, Florida, Louisiana, and Minnesota. Though he told me that the American East was actually wealthier and more luxurious than the West, he still insists that SF was the best city he's ever been to in USA.

So, to those who've been to both, which is better? Why? Could it be true that the SF Bay Area with only 8 million people could beat the South with 24 million people? Could SF, SJ, Palo Alto, Los Altos, etc beat LA, Long Beach, SD, etc?? Is it cleanliness, facillities, friendliness, safety, luxury, what could be the reasons??

Travel Tips
I was born and raised in San Francisco but have lived in So. California for the past 20 years. I really love both areas, but found that LA is more affordable than San Francisco believe it or not. San Francisco is VERY urban...I lived right in the city so never got to see any nature...which I tend to like more as I get older. I tend to like San Francisco weather better, way too hot here in LA. Public transportation in LA sucks, San Francisco has a great one...but I really like the freedom of driving a car (here in LA). As far as beauty, both have areas that are gorgeous, as well as run down dangerous areas. I think people in San Francisco may be friendlier...just because people interact more there in public (public transit, etc.) whereas people in LA are always in their cars. As far as safety...I have actually felt safer here in LA (suburb living vs. city living in San Francisco) LA has made me sort of a wimp....it is not often I see some of the "scary people" I used to see and interact with in San Francisco on a daily basis without even thinking about my safety. Just a couple things for you to think about...I really have no preference...both are great places to live if you can afford to.
Others
totally Northern California I lived in lots of towns in Southern Cali and I never got to go to Northern. So this summer we are traveling to Northern to actually have fun.

Places in Northern
-Red Wood Forest
This place has trees big enought to drive your car through the trees. and you actually can do that!!!

-San Francisco-
That place is awsome. Thats why there are so many shows from there like Thats so Raven and Full House.

Yes Southern Cali has other stuff but I cant wait to go to Northern Cali!!!
I lived in Northern California, and have been in southern California thanks to family. I am going to say Northern! The reason is during the winter you get winter (snow, cold weather, and the true Christmas spirit), In the Spring you get spring (rain, sun, flowers blooming, and everything fresh). In the Summer you get summer (sun beating down, able to wear what you wish, and feeling like being outside everyday), and Autumn you get autumn (leaves falling, vegetables riping, and the true feeling of Thanksgiving). In Southern California all you get is the feeling of warm weather, hoping it will be cooler the next day, and hoping your wishes will come true!!!
You seem very city oriented, and I can't distinguish for you which is "better". But I can tell you that the remainder of Northern and Coastal California contain thousands of square miles of open space, Redwood Forests, Rivers, Valleys, Mountains, Ocean Shores, Huge Lakes, and on and on. To the East, Central California Agriculture and the Sacramento Valley lay between the Coastal Mounts and the Gold Country foothills of the approaching Sierra Mountains. And in all these great places are cities and towns. So you tell me, which is better...South or North?
