How far is monterey bay from big sur? |
Travel Info i am going to big sur and i would also like to visit monterey bay so i was wondering how far is the drive and some places to visit in each city.... Travel Tips Hi, I will give you both North on Hwy 1 out of Moro Bay and South off Hwy 1 in Monterey. On the North bound direction of Hwy 1 it will take you 2.25 hours from Moro Bay to BIG Sur. A great place to stop and this will take time is Hearst Castle. There are four tours and each one is a little over an hour so plan this trip for at least a full day and spend the night in San Simeon at the Motel 6 it's about $45 a night for two. Next stop heading North is the Elephant Seal Beach. The signs are posted so you can't miss the stop. They are very impressive. This time of year I don't think you'll see the big Bulls just the females with their young. From this point to BIG Sur will take you 1.5 hours. You will see a few places to stop that might be of interest. You will turn inland just a bit and drive down hill into BIG Sur. I like to stop at the River Inn for lunch, some day I will make the dinner bell. This has a lot to offer, a full bar, a general store, gas and just great people. At this stop you are 45 minutes from Monterey. Of course there are a couple of must see stops on the way. The first is Point Lobos. This is a state park that is historic to the local native indians and Whaeling trade. Next is Carmel, also called Carmel by the Sea. It's a mixture of arts and crafts and upscale eating and drinking establishments. In Carmel you can purchase the 17 mile drive and drive throught the exclusive aera of Carmel. You will exit at Pacific Grove a little township right next to Monterey. This is the location of the famous Cannerey Row. A little further and you are now in Monterey. Just reverse this order and you are headed South on Hwy 1. Enjoy.... Source(s): Love this part of the Coast Other Travel Tips Not far; the city of Monterey (on the bay) is about an hour north of Big Sur on California Route 1. If you are interested in fancy houses, do the 17-Mile Drive; there is a fee. One great place in Big Sur, right on Route 1, is a restaurant called Nepenthe. Been there for over 30 years, great food, a bit pricey, but worth it. As of a few years ago it was still owned and operated by the original owners and their family. Very much a Hippie feel, counterculture from the 1960's kind of place. The architecture is very modern, heavy wood beams and huge windows overlooking the sea. It's perched right on the cliff over the water. Well worth visiting. |
