Travel Info Its official Im moving to San Francisco and Im a beach bum, What are the best beaches there? Travel Tips I don't know if you have been to SF or any other Northern CA beaches but if you are a true beach bum NorCal really isn't the best place for a beach lifestyle. The water is always too cold, it's foggy much of the year and especially in summer, seldom goes above 70 there, and the water is faily rough. Santa Cruz has a good beach scene and is warmer b/c it faces south; SC is probably the best place in NorCal to live by the beach. But if you just like living by the ocean and don't really care about laying out in the sun or swimming in the ocean and don't mind cool year round temps the NorCal might be the place for you. There are plenty of beautiful beaches there and they are quiet and not very developed at all. If you really want a classic beach culture and scene then I would check out San Diego. I grew up in the Bay Area and have lived by the beach for the past 6 years in SD and I love it. Pacific Beach is the best beach community in the state and maybe the nation in my opinion. Boards shorts, flip flops, and riding on my beach cruiser year round, it's great. Plus you can drink on the beach unlike anywhere else in CA. San Diego has great nightlife, especially in Pacific Beach, and there is always something to do or some event going on. We have the best climate and spend it outside year round. But SF is a great city too, very urban and cosmpolitan although the people in the city are a little weird but Bay Area has great people overall. SF is great just not for the beach. Others I used to live in the bay area and honestly the beaches are more rocky than anything but Santa Cruz which is south, has a very nice beach The sandy ones. Ano Nuevo is really really great. It's somewhat remote and off the beaten path. There's a little hiking path to get dwon the the beach. There is a wall full of fossils to collect, the sand is nice and the view is super. There is also a large rock 'island' off the shore, about 100 feet or so, and lots of elephant seals will bask there. It's fun to go see them. It's on Route 1. If you were going for sunbathing the beaches arent warm in San Francisco even during the summer though. For surfing you'll need a thick wetsuit. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=523... Here's a link to the California parks website. It has directions to get there and links to other areas nearby. If you're talking about the beaches in San Francisco, then Bakers Beach (AKA nude beach) right next to the Golden Gate Bridge is where you want to be. There is also the Sunset Beach in the Sunset District, but its always cold, foggy and the water is gray. I tell you this quite seriously. First of all, you are coming to the coast. You will not have a problem finding beaches or the ocean, North or South. With all of them, a 100 degree day is a 100 degree day...on the beach. The water is an entirely different matter. It is cold, it is deadly. If you are not a wet-suited surfer or experienced swimmer, stay the hell out. I live near the Sonoma Coast right now, up North from SF. The newspaper the other day read " 6th drowning death in the past 6 weeks" on Sonoma beaches. All skin diving, wet-suited Abalone divers. I worked as a medic in SF for 25 years. I have never pulled any victims that I was able to resuscitate from the Pacific. Do not even play "water-tag" with the waves....they are capable of grabbing you and taking you under even if the water was "at you knees". "Creeper" waves take about 5 people every year on Sonoma Beaches. RESPECT THE PACIFIC!!!! |
